I love the Conan stories by Robert E. Howard, but I took a dislike to the original Conan movie with Schwarzenegger. There are dramatic scenes, like the sacking of his village, his slavery and rise through the fighting pits, but from then on .. so-so.

The Conan remake had some really strong action scenes: young Conan defeating several adult warriors, the prison mutiny, the conjuring of the sand demons & fight, the fight against the kraken-monster. Jason Momoa was a good cast for the role of Conan - just like I imagined him.

The downside was that I didn`t particularly care for the final fight between Conan and the evil wizard. I can`t put my finger on it, but I think it was the swordfighting. I love well-choreographed swordfights (Rob Roy, Gladiator ..), but this one didn`t seem very realistic to me.

But still: I liked the remake better than the original, even if it is not perfect.

Nah, it was pretty *beep* It didn't really feel any more like the original Robert E. Howard Conan than the Schwarzenegger Conan. They try to cover this up by having Momoa drop some lines that were in the books in between acting like a smug douche. Schwarzenegger didn't need to put on an act about being strong and selfconfident because that's just like how Arnold is by default. So it came off as less forced than whatever Momoa was doing,

The fencing in the 2011 version is also way too much over the top compared to the 1982 version that has all fights look practical.

Wow this was the absolute worst piece of garbage I ever tried to sit through. I turned it off. The original film was iconic and not even comparable to this. Idiocracy is happening.

It is a very good film but not way better than the 1982 one.

I rated both movies 8/10. I think both are pretty good movies. Jason Mamoa is very good along with the ultra hot women in this. Jason Mamoa was good in Stargate Atlantis as well.

He is a good actor IMO

I agree. Awesome movie.

I thought Conan 2011 was awful, but entertaining.

I still like the original better but I agree this got a unfair amount of hate and is way better than The Destroyer

A wrote a book last week, it took me 2 hours to write it and it's way better than the Shakespeare books, in every respect, IMO.

So strange to still be getting replies to this almost five years after I'd seen it and posted this, probably a little drunk at the time to boot. I wonder if I'd still feel the same if I re-watched both back to back. Oh well.

What's even stranger is my jumping on the bandwagon too so I can put in my 2 cents, probably because I just finished watching it about 5 min ago...oh well, here goes; I happen to be a Conan fan although never got a chance to actually read Howard's stories. I did grow up reading Curtis Magazines version of Conan which later became a regular Marvel Comics Group publication. All the stories were adapted from REH and must say were all pretty incredible stories plus the stark black/white artwork just seemed to add to it's awesomeness. Anyway, I'm writing because I just finished watching Conan 2011 and was not in the bit impressed nor do I feel I'll ever have an urge to watch it again, unlike other movies in my library. Don't get me wrong, I have no great love for Arnie's version either but I thought it had better pacing, choreography, score, and development. This 2011 film had everything it could've needed to make a fantastic film, were it in the hands of a capable director. Conan had no memorable theme, no memorable fight scene, and appeared to be smirking unnecessarily at times. I hope there will be a real Conan movie made someday and for the meantime have relegated this movie to the little kid's section of my library to keep them somewhat entertained when my relatives come visiting. Take care everyone....

Anyone who compares this movie with 1982 version is either a troll or a teenager. How can you even find this one better than the epic movie starring Arnold Schwarzenneger and others? Connan the Barbarian 1982 has a very satisfying plot (lots of sword fighting, giant snakes, a devil megician, a cult movement, huge temples, superb costumes and hillarious sound tracks. I don't say it was a Bravehearth but still very entertaining and sensational movie of it's time. This new version can be considered only an average episode of Xena. What does this forgetabble flick has at par with other one? Jason Momoa? Are you serious? Even watching the closing credits with the snake figure and the soundtrack of the 1982 one is more entertaining than this one.
