Perception about Asian male's sex appeal

I am raising this subject for the sake of a rational discussion about the perception of Asian male's sex appeal.

Probably no one would dispute that Tony Leung's bold performance in the sex scenes in LC sets a precendent that for the first time an Asian male actor is portrayed as a hot-blooded sexaul being on the big screen. A few posters remark how hot Tony Leung looks. One cannot help but wonder if it would help to change the perception about the sexual image of Asian male in general, and in movies and TV in particular. Let's face it. Here in the U.S., if you ask anyone to quickly come up with a few adjectives to describe an Asain woman, most likely these would be the words: sensual, beautiful, mysterous, delicate, smart, etc.--mostly words implying pretty positive sexual connotation. Ask the same question about an Asian man, what would most people conjure up? Most likely: nerdy, wonkish, awkward, asexual, etc. Why? My theory is that the way Asian male and female is portrayed in the mass media is drastically different.

I just want to start this thread to provoke some discussion. Anyone with an opinion, please chime in.

I am not Asian, but I think that Asian men are very sexy. I think that here in America, Asian men aren't typically portrayed as being sexy in the media, and that's why these stereotypes continue. I didn't think that Asian men were sexy until I saw "House of Flying Daggers" with Takeshi Kaneshiro and I was hooked. :p I love Asian films, and I have seen many where the men played sexual roles (In the Realm of the Senses, 2046, Days of Being Wild), but it's because they are portrayed on screen differently than in America. I really think that the perception of Asian men as non-sexual beings would change if Americans were more exposed to Asian men playing sexual roles here in the West.

I agree with the OP, in the UK there's a myth that Asians have small penises. Which I think is false. There's a certain amount of sexual prejudice towards Asians, glad somebody brought this up.

I think it's simply a racist desexualization by white males -- perhaps as a way not to be intimidated while they are attracted to Asian women. A way to pretend there isn't competition; or that the desexualization makes it safer to find Asian women attractive; to tell oneself that Asian women will be attracted to one becasue Asian males are "inadequate".

The idea that Asian men aren't sexual, or have small genitals is, of course, absurd nonsense. And note the contrast: the general white male fear that African-American males have larger genitals.

I agree dude, although speaking as a white male I'm not threatened sexually by Asians or Africans. I'm not sexually prejudice. But it is an absurd Western myth that Asians are inadequate sexually.

It's not. It's been studied numerous times and is taken seriously enough that the World Health Organization bases condom size recommendations on it (smaller ones for Asia)

Death to shakeycam directors!

I would really like to see this study. The ones I've seen specified 49mm for asians, 52mm for whites, and 53mm for blacks. It is probably true that blacks have larger penises and asians smaller, but the differences seem to be very minor and greatly exaggerated in public.

I think John Lone and Ken Wantanabe are both very sexy.

Perhaps I am waaayyy out of the loop here, but Asian men, to me, are some of the sexiest men... period! From Ken Watanabe, to Chow Yun Fat, to Li Lianjie (Jet Li), to Donnie Yen, to even Tony Jaa. Tony Leung's performance in this movie was outstanding, as was Tang Wei's. Even the "nerdy, scholarly" stereotype to me, has an appeal. But, I suppose I don't agree with the stereotype of the asexual, nerdy Asian man. As I said, apparently, I'm waaaayyy out of the loop on this one.

Forgot to mention that I am a Native American woman. I was married to an Hispanic from North Central New Mexico, have had native boyfriends, white boyfriends and hispanic boyfriends. The whole size discussion is a bit off the original subject, but since it became a topic here... I believe that it's a matter of personal "druthers." Unless we're talking freakishly tiny, if you're attracted to someone, then the physical part of the relationship is fulfilling -- in every way. A man can be extremely gifted in terms of the equipment, but if you're not attracted, it won't make a difference. I've known a few Asian men to whom I was attracted, but I always felt like they were only interested in Asian women, or white women. Sometimes I feel like Native women are completely overlooked as sexual beings, and I know many of my Native female friends and sisters have felt that as well. Then again, there's the Disney Pocahontas image of the busty Native chick prancing around in the skimpy buckskin falling over the white guy (barf). I guess when it all comes down to it, it's all personal and subjective, but to the OP -- I've always found Asian men incredibly attractive and sexy.

it really depends on the individual. sure there's asian men who are rather dorky or unattractive, but there are those who are good looking and masculine, and women of all races will see that if they were to meet an asian man like that. and when it comes to the media, the portrayals of asian men you are describing are always of foreign asian men who speak with a heavy accent, not asian americans or ones who grew up in western countries.

this goes both ways; anyone with eyes can see that most of the asian women they come across in real life are not that attractive or sexual at all. there are some asian men that actually fulfill such sexual connotations better than the majority of asian women in the world would be able to.
