My interpretation of it was that he couldn't conform to society's version of a happy life, so rather than have him bring them down they abandoned him. They took down the "Welcome" sign because he was no longer welcome. The cold represents isolation, but as we saw that he missed things like the laughter of children I doubt that was what he wanted.
