Not a very necessary remake

The original 1990 movie still remains a cult classic even to this day after a few decades of it's release with imaginative make up, scary intense moments that are handled very well, great acting from everyone involved with Angelica Huston stealing the show, atmospheric visuals, and a well executed story.

The 2020 remake is just unnecessary. Granted, it does have some competent visual asthetics (the less said about the terrible CGI the better), the acting was fine although Octavia Spencer stole the movie, Alan Silvestri's score was nice, and I'll give it points for at least sticking to the original ending of the book when compared to the 1990 film, but everything else was poorly executed.

The whole movie came across as rather too silly than terrifying, the idea of race swapping the main character and his grandmother made little to no sense, the script was so bland and incomplete, and while Anne Hathaway's performance as the Grand High Witch was fun, her accent was just so cringe-inducing. Not to mention she came across as way too campy. Yes, Angelica Huston was campy in the original, but she balanced it with terror especially underneath her make up. Anne Hathaway's acted very well in other movies, don't get me wrong. It's just that she didn't have the spark that Angelica had.

My advice, go watch the original again.
