I don't get it! Why do all 'black' movies suck?
can u name a good one
shareMalcolm X. Almost all of Spike Lee's movies, actually.
shareNot easily broken.
shareI agree with you. Unfortunately, people won't be honest and say black movies suck. I will attempt to name a few good ones. "Akeelah and the Bee" was good if that counts as a black movie. I don't know how you define a "Black movie." Does it have to be a predominantly black cast and director? If that is the case I can't name any recent good "Black movies." I would have to go back to: "Boyz N The Hood," "Do The Right Thing," and "Boomerang." After those movies I'm lost for words. Tyler Perry's films are lucrative (Congratulations), but they are not good! The other thing is why do "Black movies" always have to deal with the "Black man White woman" issue?
shareYou're forgetting a little movie called Soulfood.
shareA lot of the ones I've seen are always constant rap music and stereotypes. They are what turn me away from Urban films, ever seen RAGDOLL or LEPRECHAUN 5: LEPRECHAUN IN THE HOOD?
The anthology TALES FROM THE HOOD isn't too bad though, but of course only one segment doesn't involve racism. Yeesh, do racists always have to be white in movies?
Just yesterday I bought THE HONEYMOONERS movie, with what's his comedian face.

Menace II Society
Dead Presidents
basically the ones where blacks are sterotyped.
Cooley High, Glory,
There a problem, fool??
THE IMDBLACK MAN
The problem is in my opinion, in most of them, it's the same cast (or seems to be). While the storylines are sometimes OK, how many more times can you see Morris Chestnut and Gabrielle Union in the same movie without getting sick to your stomach?
And then you have top of the line "Grade A" garbage like:
The Cookout
Who's Your Caddy (currently #6 in the bottom 100)
Soul Plane
Phat Girlz
The Wash (directed by DJ Pooh - enought said about that)
and just about any film with Mike Epps in the cast
Heres to all you so called critics-theres alot of us women who don't mind seeing Morris Chestnut in any of these movies! I personally could care less of the content of the movie as long as I get ta see me some Morris Chestnut!!!
shareI actually LOVE Gabrielle Union and Morris Chestnut's chemistry!!!!
share"The problem is in my opinion, in most of them, it's the same cast."
I guess it's hard for you to tell them apart, huh.

Well, your viewpoint, while I respect it, should point out to you the institutionalized racism still rampant in our society balanced out with the fact that Whites do not always share the same challenges or experiences as black in america.

Oh, my bad, I was trying to make a point to the original poster. Sorry if I replied to you.

I like some of Denzel's Movies. It is just that most black comedies are pretty bad.
shareI am a Black woman and I do not like poorly made, *typical* Black movies...I don't like all that over acting and "heeeeeeeey girl" that the low budget ones are full of....and I don't think Madea/Tyler Perry is funny.....at all...like not even a little bit.
But I do like a well made movie with a Black cast. Why did I get Married, I liked a lot but that is the only Perry movie I like...and I've seen I think 4 of them...I keep hoping it gets better....
I find Black Drama movies to be better if they have a real cast and real story line. Black comedies I guess it is a matter of taste, I have always embraced all kinds of culture specific entertainment...I happen to think Frasier was the best show of it's time. But I have Black friends who are like 'what, how can you like that' and I am like How can you like House of Payne?
They don't. It is your opinion, which I respect, but disagree with.
shareBlack people tend to only flock to the overly stereotypical, cliche, no brain church or ghetto inspired flick. This schism causes a lack of direction for black filmmakers seeking to get signed on with or for original scripts not dealing qith 1950's racism or how many people I shot.
shareA couple Of Old ones.
But I;m Sure you'll Hate This One
White MAn's Burden (Most Whites hate This one)
and A Soldiers Story

Personally I though Not Easily Broken
was very Lacking. I don't know too Many Men That talk to their kids
like that Black or White. And Definetly not many Women that talk to their
Husband like that. But I though the Scenes in general were too quick and too predictable
There arent many men that talk to their kids like that in the movie either. Just one. But I have seen my fair share. I guess it depends on your life experience. Its just a movie though and it cant contain all aspects of reality.
shareI find myself agreeing to some people here and I will say this: I saw this movie at the theater and I saw because a friend of mine wanted to and was like "Okay.". I thought it was okay when I watched it, but looking back, I think that this movie is something that I probably wouldn't watch again except maybe if it's on HBO, Showtime or anything like that, but even then, it would probably be for a few minutes before changing it. The movies that I've seen that some mentioned, I have seen them and liked them. Movies like Boyz N The Hood, Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, etc. comedies like House Party, Friday, Don't Be A Menace, etc. I don't recall seeing a lot of promotion for this movie except maybe when I flipped to BET once. I hate seeing this racism argument and that is neither here nor there. Usually whenever I see a movie that's mostly promoted on BET, it mainly caters to a mostly african american audience. That's fine and all, but it's kind of the same thing every time. It's like when I saw a trailer for "Something New" on that channel, or movies like "The Wood" (Which I did like), "The Best Man", or "The Brothers". I like movies with a black cast, don't get me wrong, but sometimes when I think of movies like this, I tend to watch with skepticism.

Just off the top of my head ...
A Soldiers Story w/ Howard Rollins
Deep Cover w/ Laurence Fishburn
Sugar Hill w/ Wesley Snipes
Eve's Bayou w/ Samuel L. Jackson
Clockers w/ Delroy Lindo
In the Heat of the Night w/ Sidney Poitier
Lean on Me w/ Morgan Freeman
Blue Hill Avenue w/ Allen Payne
Jason's Lyric w/ Jada Pinkett Smith
Last King of Scotland w/ Forrest Whitaker
You shouldn't generalize. There are plenty of movies by White people that REALLY BLOW!
Ethnicity has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with quality.
I haven't seen this movie yet, but since it's a "black" movie I had a feeling no matter how good or bad it is that it'd get a bad rating on IMDb, and looking at the demographic breakdown it's obvious male voters (who I'm guessing aren't mostly black) hated the movie while females liked it.
Anyway, as far as "good black movies" goes, I'll list a few I feel are noteworthy, but will leave out movies that have black leads but aren't "black" movies.
Akeelah and the Bee
A Soldier's Story
City of God
Tsotsi
Hotel Rwanda
Yesterday
Moolaade
New Jack City
The Great Debaters
The Pursuit of Happyness
The Color Purple
Devil In A Blue Dress
Hav Plenty
Black Orpheus
Love Jones
Disappearing Acts
Daughters of the Dust
Rosewood
Coffy
Eve's Bayou
Black Caesar
Woman Thou Art Loosed
Love & Basketball
Down in the Delta
Lackawanna Blues
What's Love Got To Do With It?
Do the Right Thing
Set It Off
Dead Presidents
Watermelon Man
If you ask me, the reason why there appears to be a shortage of good black films is because the people with money really only want to make stupid "black" comedies with a black guy dressed up as a woman. You hardly ever see any mystery, thriller, horror, or sci-fi films with mostly black casts. You will never see a movie like "The Departed" or "Eagle Eye" with a mostly black cast unless a white actor is the main character.
