If Sophie grew up in Greece, why does she have an American accent?

This seemed a very obvious mistake... surely even Meryl Streep's character would have a Greek twang having lived there for the best part of 20 years....

I'm a native Swede, never lived in another country and I speak english with an american accent. Because I learned to speak english that way.
My sister who favors brittish movies over american speaks english with a brittish accent. Because that's how she learned it.

the thing that puzzles me is, how does an English woman come to be in a pop group with two Americans? HOw did they get together in the first place? It is never explained.

Besides stating the obvious ie: they are actors, it's a movie, Abba was from Sweden (not Greece) and you don't expect stage talent to have Greek accents when performing.

There are quite a few people in America that have strong accents that are not American while they've lived here their entire life. Home schooling is a huge factor in this. I work with a lady who was born and raised in California yet speaks broken English due to her environment during her formative years being surrounded by Spanish speaking people.

I was raised in Naples Italy and when I lived there for 10 yrs I never once spoke with an Italian "twang". I could speak Italian perfectly, but never with a twang. I do have a slight southern twang that I did pick up from my parents, as they are both from the South, which I can turn off and on whenever I want. I do notice the twang comes quickly when I'm around my southern relatives, other then that you could never tell.

People are stupid with random moments of brillance!
