If Sophie grew up in Greece, why does she have an American accent?

This seemed a very obvious mistake... surely even Meryl Streep's character would have a Greek twang having lived there for the best part of 20 years....

reply

why would Streep's character or her daughter talk with a Greek accent? Streep's character was not born there, she moved there when she was old enough not to have an accent, she's not going to "take it" just because she lives there. And her daughter was raised by a native English speaking woman.

because she'd be surrounded by Greek people her entire life - just having an American mother wouldn't make you sound as American as Sophie does growing up in another country.

I live in London where there's many Indian and Asian young people who sound totally British - rather than how their parents sound.

Er, that would be because London is an English-speaking city, duh.

My niece is half Spanish on her Fathers side. She has lived in Spain all her life and speaks perfect Spanish, but she still speaks English with a perfect English accent thanks to my sister.

You know....quite frankly.... I don't care.... I loved this movie!! It was fun, and the music .... what can I say. People have criticized Brosnan's voice. It wasn't that bad. This is a fun, great movie. Sorry, I don't understand the need to nitpik a movie to death.... Just enjoy and have FUN!!!

Right on!!!

reply

Kegan 3 - Spot on. It is a fun movie. No of them can sing but who cares? I bet they had great fun making this movie

If you grew up in Greece ... why do you speak American?

God, you can't just ask people why they speak American!

reply

That was so fetch.

To the OP: my FIL came to America from Greece in his twenties about 45 years ago. He never lost his Greek accent even though 99% of the people in his life spoke English only. There's no reason Donna would pick up a Greek accent when speaking English. If anything, she'd lose her American accent when speaking Greek.

reply

They are American actresses, that is why they don't have Greek accents. I'm surprised anyone needs to explain that to you.

I think whether or not she took an accent would be...Sophie's choice. *high fives himself*

reply

Ha ha ha - I wish IMDB had a 'like' button - that was great! :^)

reply

I lived in London for 20 years & didn't pick up an English accent. I think some accents are harder or easier to lose and/or pick up than others. I also assume that Sophie would have gone to boarding school. Otherwise how else would she have such close, long-standing girlfriends who have completely different accents?

Anyway, as someone else asks: Who cares? This is a great movie. Logic doesn't have to come into it surely??!!!

reply

She grew up hearing English with her mother, so presumably she speaks English with an American accent because of her and possibly fluent Greek if she went to Greek school. She might have gone to an American/International school though, and a lot of them speak American English. The one I went to did, anyway.

reply

Funny thing is that NO ONE in this movie has a Greek accent. Everybody either has American or British accents. The Greeks in the movie don't speak any English! LOL!

Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry!
