Which actress was best?

Only Mary Beth Hurt was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, but Rose Byrne was supposedly considered to be a "dark horse" by Variety for an Oscar nom. Anyone else surprised that no one else in the cast is nominated for anything?

That's a toughie. The scenes with Harden and Washington resonated with me most. But Mary Beth Hurt and Toni Collette were also excellent. Piper Laurie was good although I noticed some Carrie channeling.

Brittany Murphy, by far. She was snubbed of a Best Supporting Actress nomination for this performance.

I think it's a tie between Mary Beth Hurt and Kerry Washington. Both performances really stood out to me.

Hurt was excellent but Byrne was annoying at best. Her mannerisms are the same from one character to the next and she pretty much plays everything the same way.
Marcia Gay Harden, Murphy and Washington stood out for me.
