Which actress was best?

Only Mary Beth Hurt was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, but Rose Byrne was supposedly considered to be a "dark horse" by Variety for an Oscar nom. Anyone else surprised that no one else in the cast is nominated for anything?

In my opinion Rose Byrne and Mary Beth Hurt were by far the best characters in the movie, and I noticed that right away. Both of them did an incredible job. As for everyone else, they did a great job, but nothing to write home about. Britney Murphy was good too, but I felt she was overacting a bit. Most notably when she was yelling, trying to emphasize her raspy voice (that drove me nuts).

All in all, the acting in this movie was fantastic.. but I do think the choice of nominations was very fair. I'm not at all surprised.

I had no idea going into the movie that each character is about as important (screen-time wise) as the next. I thought Toni Collete was the lead. She turned out to be my favorite character and was extremely convincing. I also thought Rose Byrne was excellent.

Definitely the Marcia Gay Harden character.... Her acting when she met the prostitue was top notch. She exuded complete sadness when the prostitue friend was telling her things about her daughter.... Brittany Murphy played the same role she has played in countless other movies... the quirky, trashy, confused, crazy type. It was not really a stretch for her to play that part

Rose Byrne was so great in this film! I don't know why this movie didn't get more recognition- the performances were great.

Brittany Murphy was definatly the best actress and stood out the most to me! She definatly needed some recognition for this movie. I feel bad for her, she is so talented and extremely under rated. She never gets the recognition she deserves! I even think she did a great job physically to transform herself into he character from the way she talked and the way she looked. She really had to glmaour down for this role! And someone said that she has played this role before but I have never seen this so if someone could prove that to me it would be great! I love haters lol they say the most random things.

I would have to go with Rose Byrne. Her character was just so desolate and heartbreaking, she acted so well.

I thought the acting in this film was brilliant; most all were worthy of acting noms in my view. Considering that, picking a best is hard.

Toni Collette and Giovanni Ribisi are always good. And in some ways, I think they had the most challenging parts in the film.

Marcia Gay Harden sometimes overacts, but here, I thought she was at her best.

I normally don't like Mary Steenburgen, but thought she played the part perfectly. The scene with her daughter was excellent imo.

James Franco was good for his small part.

I think Nick Searcy's performance is the most underrated of the film.

Well then agin, if not Nick Searcy, then Brittany Murphy's performance is the most underrated. It seems like the same character she always plays - and yeah, it sort is. But that is what I thought was so brilliant about her performance here - same character, but much different (aka better) performance. I thought she was more subtle here, more complex, and most importantly more sympathetic.

But Rose Byrne's performance really got my attention. I'm surprised she didn't receive a nomination.

As good as Rose Byrne was, though, if I had to pick "a best"...

Kerry Washington. Her performance really moved me.

Then Kerry Washington.

All of the others were just alright for me.

I'm surprised this cast was not nominated for anything.

I thought Toni Collette, Marcia Gaye Harden, and Brittany Murphy were the best.

Giovanni Ribisi was also great, he was so intense.

I think it was amazing the way some of the actors played off of each other. Byrne was excellent with her mother. Washington had all of the best exchanges of the movie with Harden. Murphy stood alone in my opinion. THAT was great acting. She is the most sympathetic because she does not apologize for trying to do the right thing, is a loyal and loving person and sees things the way they are (her loving nature makes her sympathize with Washington, which is how a character like that (like Murphy's) would really be if she was angry, abused, but a genuinely good person trying to survive with her friend). She makes you understand that a poor prostitute is more than just a product of bad parenting, but something that could happen to any young girl-- Moncrief should be credited for exploring these themes... but Murphy embodies the themes of the stories that went before hers with courageousness. It is not over-acted, but acted with sympathy for the hopelessness that this character could have felt, but didn't because of her love for her daughter. The other stories mostly hint at mothers (except for the wife, although she lets the murdered girls down) who let their daughters down. Murphy's is the only character who shows complete love for her daughter (and her girlfriend), despite her horrible homelife. The thing is, these women, with the exception of Byrne are people that you could meet every day which makes the film unique as a study of women and violence in society. I singled out Byrne b/c her segment is kind of far-fetched, but she is also great because she makes the story seem as real as the others...like she really might have lost her sister and was emotionally damaged by it.
1) Murphy---convinces you that the movie was worth following, b/c her life was symbolic of needless suffering in an endlessly mysoginistic society.
2) Laurie---great because she makes an impression as the ultimate bad mother with so little time. The youngest mother in the film is the kindest.
3) Washington/Harden---They work off each other so impressively. They both love in a desperate way, but contrast in their actions because of their social situations.

I was blown away by Brittany Murphy. I never thought she could act like that, it was amazing. I thought she deserved something, and I believe now that she can do dramatic roles. She should stop with the romantic comdey's and do more stuff like this. Rose has always been a favorite of mine so I wasn't suprised at how great she was. The others where also great, it was just a great cast, and a well writtened movie.
