Did ray die?

I guess the only question I have is with the dialogue at the end sort of leaving it fairly open to discussion, I guess I have to ask if he ended up dying after having his epiphany. I'm not so sure he did. I think with the change of his outlook and fulfilling his promise to his partner in regards to protecting the pregnant woman that he ends up as a character worth saving.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Having heard much about this movie, it has come to Netflix where I finally got to enjoy it. With tongue firmly in cheek... "no" Ray does not die.

Bruges is a fairy-tale place, remember. Ken, overweight, with a bullet in his leg and a serious, blood-loss neck wound, is able to pull himself UP a clock-tower stairs - quicker than a healthy, foul-mouthed man can descend - then survive a five-story fall onto cobblestone long enough to warn Ray.

Ray, shot through the chest once on the barge has been able to race far enough to be able to be shot four more times in the chest, though not with the same type of bullet - but the same gun - that completely decapitated the dwarf.

After saving Ray, the paramedics returned to aid the ticket-seller at the clock-tower, who was half beaten to death by Harry. Following a full recovery, he became the Director of Tourism for the City of Bruges.

Great movie! I especially liked the message that the inn-keeper typed - verbatim - for Ken.

The screenplay contains a scene after the shoot out revealing, among other things, that Ray survived his wounds and the murdered boy's name is Tobias.

I think there was something very telling about him dying at the end. He does die,

Why else didn't the paramedic put the oxigen mask on him? they are about to put the mask on him but the paramedic has a scared and shocked face. Like Ray was already dead.

also Hollow Point bullets, didn't you see the dwarf guy's face? there is no way he would survive those bullets, specially at close range.

I know some people say he survived but there is no way.

right....

Having just watched the movie, I don't know where you're getting this stuff about the paramedic looking shocked and not giving him the oxygen mask. He doesn't look shocked at all, and there's no indication that he didn't put the oxygen mask on him.

Obviously Ray's death was left uncertain. As someone else said, what's "important" is that Ray decided he now wanted to live. It's artsy, and stuff.

But considering that the original screenplay contained a scene in which Ray survived, and considering I'm a hopeless romantic, I'll consider him alive. :3

ok the way he looks might be up for interpretation

BUT he clearly is about to put the oxygen mask and then pulls back and doesn't put it.

it's clear to me, the guy never does.

reply

He definitely puts the non-rebreather on or at least was switching to a BVM. You don't see it because the mask doesn't go over a person's eyes. I mean they're loading the guy into the ambulance, EMS doesn't declare someone dead till they're cold. At this point they would be trying to control the bleeding and if he went into cardiac arrest performing cpr until they reached the hospital.

Some day you will die somehow and something's gonna to steal your carbon.

Aaaaaaannnnnnd you're still missing the point. The point being: H-O-L-L-O-W--P-O-I-N-T--B-U-L-L-E-T-S. Let's just say there's a reason they're illegal in every *beep*ing country in the world. Being shot multiple times in the chest and abdomen with H-O-L-L-O-W--P-O-I-N-T--B-U-L-L-E-T-S is not survivable. That is a *beep*ing fact. Now let's all move on from this silly question.

Hollow bullet is not relevant with Ray's death. It's used to make Jimmy's face not recognisable when shot and to set ground for Harry killing himself. Now get lost you f#cking Yankee c#nt.

reply

He got shot in the stomach three times, with some effective bullets but still it would be possible for him to survive since there were no shots in the chest or head. The director gives the film an open ending.

Count me as a 'Ray lived' viewer.

At the same time, this is certainly a film where 'leaving it up to the viewer' isn't an empty cop-out, either pov seems absolutely plausible.

I personally believe as I was someone who has said there should be a 2nd In Bruge film that yes Ray was shot 4 times, but in fantasy he survives, look at Ken how did not die even after the fall, just not possible. But I have seen in films and Televison people survive. Even some of the top films have implausible things happen that would be impossible. Personally this was a fantasy film so the impossible is possible, look where have you ever heard of a gangster being sent to Bruge ever?. I did hear Martin McDonagh makes a film every 4 years?, and 2016 I reckon we will see them come back with Ray now ok coming back to Bruge. Well that's how I would do it, only problem is it will stop us all talking about what happens?

I don't think he is dead or not being the point of the movie. The whole movie is about the story, not the character. It just wants to tell us a story and when the story ends, the movie ends. It does not matter about the characters story afterward.

Every shot went through his body, and if nothing major bleeding was injured then he could survive.

I only did a quick googling and found Angel Alvarez, wo survived 21 shots (in arms, legs, chest and stomach) from the American police. This is unbelieveable but shows what extreme luck one can have.

Personally I hope he made it.
