It's about time, I hate cellular phones!

I wasn't the biggest fan of the book, but I admired it for pointing out how detached and cold they are making the world. I don't have a cellular phone myself, but I just don't think I could ever pick up the habit of letting a rectangular block manage my activities and interests. I just never understood how or why something so pointless became so mainstream. I'm not trying to seem offensive or anything, I know that many people love their phones, but for crying out loud - I saw a six-year-old on the street earlier this week, taking a selfy photograph with their own cellular phone. I've seen couples sitting in restaurants together, texting on their phones and totally ignoring each other. I've seen people driving like drunks because they're using cellular phones in their cars. And it's not like modern society has ever needed cellular phones, the 20th century is a great example of that. People had cellular phones back then, but not very many of them, kids certainly didn't have them up until the late nineties... now look at how far-gone the world is.

This film looks like it could be either really good and influential, or incredibly lame and scattered around... no idea yet but I'd love to see the trailer.

I must admit that I grinned a little when I heard about this show, knowing that I, as another person without a cell phone, would be spared.
I hate them too and to be fair, I'm not sure I would notice the difference if every cell phone owner became a zombie ;)

reply

I couldn't agree with you more. Honestly, there have been times where I've been walking down the street and accidentally bumped int people whose noses were buried in the glowing screens of their iPhones. They don't even notice, they just grunt and continue their texting. If there ever is a zombie apocalypse, you can bet that every zombie's face will be illuminated with the light from a cell phone. 😉

cellular communication is one of the most complex and brilliant engineering networks created, it's an absolute miracle and one of the greatest achievements of mankind

so many movies, so little time

reply

Brilliant? I don't know whether to laugh or throw up right now. You sound like a spokesperson for Apple or Samsung. You know, crack addicts and alcoholics think that booze and drugs are the greatest achievements of mankind, too. Addicts often don't want to see the ugly side of their vices, and the same goes for phone zombies.

Yeah it is pretty complex and brilliant, but so was the atomic bomb.
Just because something is a great achievement doesn't mean it can't also bring lots of negative things with it.
Same goes for the tv, great invention, lots of fun, but it also turned countless people into couch potatoes and removed quite a bit of social interaction away from many families.
You won't hear me say the mobile phone is not a very smart thingy and a great invention, but I can still hate it for what it did to our society.

Well, it's a technology that has evolved very rapidly in a very short time. What was once a brick-sized portable telephone for business in the 1990's, has now become a tiny computer that has worked its way into everything in the world. It's near-impossible to find any modern films now where a character doesn't have a cell phone, or to drive through a city without seeing at least one advert for a phone. For cell phone zombies, this is an ideal society because they're surrounded by the only thing they love, their digital tech. But for anyone who can't stand cell phones, it's really depressing. I agree, impressive technology, but still something to be hated for the way it's controlling society. :(

True. I'm really surprised that the digital generation hasn't yet gotten sick of the constant texting and tweeting. They never get bored of it, and they ignore everything else around them. It's definitely a disease.

And there are so many heavy metals in the phone batteries that are known to cause negative health effects with long-term exposure, too. There's no definite proof that cell phones can cause cancer, but studies do show a high possibility and you'd think that people would rather be safe than sorry, but apparently being able to text constantly is worth more to them than their health. :(

Wait, so, there's all this evidence of serious health issues connected to it, and people still aren't taking action or addressing this problem? That's disturbing. :\

Well, sugar making people fat does make a lot more sense. Sugars and starches (carbohydrates) converts into fat. Since people these days eat a ton of sugar all the time, it's not surprising. I mean, nobody's eating buckets of grease or anything, but they're eating candy and bread and cake and chips and a load of other sugar-filled foods every day. I find it odd that people still say sugar isn't bad for you in large amounts, and then they question why there's such a booming obesity epidemic in the 21st century.

I am not a zombie or sheep, I have never owned or either want a mobile phone, they turn people into the most ignorant people going.

reply

I agree. Cell phone users for the most part have their brains rewired to expect instant gratification. They always want something from nothing, and they shut out the world around them for the sake of their technology. I used to be able to go into a cinema or art gallery or to the beach without seeing any phones at all. Now there's nowhere that they haven't wormed their way into. And it's really sad that people are surrounded by so many beautiful things in the world, but they shut it all out and try to replace it with Facebook and Twitter. Kids growing up in today's society are being raised to think that friendship and loyalty and love is disposable, because their Facebook friends and followers are disposable. They're being taught that learning is about doing a Google search, not about dedication and effort. And worst of all, they're growing up letting the world pass them by. Those cell phones just aren't worth it.

Haha love these pointless posts.

Welcome to the world. Whether you like it or not, the only person who is going to end up losing is you if you continue to stay wilfully ignorant and refuses to keep up with technologies.

reply

Wow, I feel really sorry for you. The fact that you think it seriously matters what type of technology a person chooses to use is ridiculous. You have every right to use your cell phone just as I have every right to not use one, and I'm not "behind" in any way whatsoever.

I'm going to miss posts like these when this place is shut down.

Please listen to your users IMDb!!

OP I agree with everything you say, I resisted the urge until much later, but eventually succumbed to it. As one user said it is very handy to do everything in one place, call, text, read message boards(!), do your banking, buy stuff all at the touch of a button, but I despair when our family get together and majority of the youngsters are on their phones in the living room, not talking to each other, and when they do converse it lasts for a few minutes and its back to the phone!! When you look around in the world, it actually feels like everyone has become zombies!

Have you seen the film by the way? I watched it last night and came here to read other people's views. It was ok but could have been better written. Now I know what all these ghastly "phone" towers all over the place are really there for!

reply

I've read the book but I haven't yet seen the film. From what I've heard it's not bad but not overly great, either. Still, I'm glad that for once there's a film coming out addressing the negativity of cell phones. I can see that some people find them very useful or buy them for safety reasons, but I've just never seen the point. It's depressing when I say "hello" to my friends in person and their only response is to text #shejustsaidhi on their Twitter accounts instead of saying "hi" back. :-\

I find your opinions on the proliferation of smartphones very insightful, even more so for your age, and is something I fully agree with. The herd mentality of today's society is pathetic, seeing so many people glued to their gadgets like lab rats. The world needs more independent thinkers, keep it up.

reply

Thank you. I think in moderation cellular phones can be useful, however I really don't understand why people always assume I'm deprived because I don't have one. I've never needed one. I think in the case of cell phones, they were an invention that nobody ever really needed until they were told that they needed it. The success and the embracing of cellular technology is mostly just the result of excellent marketing. I can't turn on the television without seeing a cell phone ad. I can't drive down the highway without seeing a cell phone on a billboard. Apple and Samsung and Bell Aliant all pay top dollar to have their mobile devices advertised everywhere. These products are placed in multiple shows and movies every year. They're shown in newspapers, shopping mall signs, posters... and then in the case of school-aged children, there's the pressure to get one because they want to fit in with the crowd. I'm in college right now and it seems that everyone is in an unmentioned competition to own the finest, latest and most expensive cell phone. If these things weren't a factor, I doubt that cell phones would be nearly as popular.
