The most disgraceful product placement I have EVER seen...

Wow, seriously, I just saw this film and I am in total shock. This movie was bursting at the seems with absolutely shameful product placement throughout. Honestly, I really don't get how ANYONE could actually like this movie based on this fact.

*spoiler*

The part at the end with the whole "intel" chip inside Mimzy (an A.I. stuffed animal from eons ahead of our current time period, mind you) I just about threw up a little in my mouth when I saw that... I seriously just don't know what to say anymore about the current state Hollywood films are in... I never EVER could have imagined product placement becoming this f_cking prevalent in movies. We even have to sit through 15 mins of ads before a movie starts at the theater now (they are even starting to put the ads on DVDs for f__k sake!)

Why people, WHY do you all keep defending and supporting these travesties? Honestly, I really just don't get it. Are we really SO brainwashed that we now accept our movies as being 2 hour long commercials...? WTF! I mean what's next, mid movie "breaks" so they can show us full length ads? For god SAKE man!

I do think it's disgusting how much product placement is everywhere these days and how it's all tied up into movies. But it seemed that the "Intel" logo served to show that Mimzy was created on Earth and not from, say, another Galaxy. Although any logo would have served and I'm guessing that Intel paid a good chunck of change to get their logo used.

Product placement in movies certainly set a new milestone with The Island

I have to concur with the op. I was utterly shocked when I saw the intel logo. They could have easily placed a "made in Japan" or something like that and it would have sufficed.

I really hope all the people claiming to be "utterly shocked" are just trolling for the lulz. Because if they're serious ... I don't even know what to do.

Why does everyone get so worked up about product placement?

In real life, people use brand-name products. It is a fact. Doesn't bother me much unless it is really blatant, but I thought it was fine in this movie.

I'd rather see someone in a movie or on TV drink a "Coke" or "Pepsi" than a "Soda". It makes it seem more realistic.

In fact, I'm actually interested in seeing the "movie" coming out soon that is basically a long 10-minute ad for the "I-Phone killer" cell phone. It is a blatant movie/ad/product placement, but it looked entertaining enough to be worth the watch, plus I'm interested in finding out what the "I-Phone Killer" can do.

I think it was explaining Mimzy on a level kids would understand. They could have examined the thing and gone for big exposition about nanotechnology and such, and kids would go "huh???" But put in something they DO understand, something they are familiar with "Intel is inside computers, I've seen that on the TV. Ah, so Mimzy is a computer!". Simple as that. They could have put an AMD chip inside, but I don't think kids generally would have "gotten it".

Kids are all about brands, Its the way our society has brainwashed them. Kids don't have "portable MP3 audio players", they have iPods. They don't wear "trainers", they wear Nikes. They don't drink "soft drinks", they drink Coke or Sprite. Mimzy isn't an example of a "nano-tech supercomputer", it's an Intel PC.

I personally hate the brand-culture, the sooner it is removed the better our society will be. But since it's here, we shouldn't shy away from products just because we're concerned about "product placement" (the horrorrrr!).

How many times has the "star" of the movie been a brand-name car? Herbie? I don't see people suggesting the film-makers should design a completely new car just because they don't want to place brand cars in their movies. People drive Fords in real life, they drive them in movies. If you have a movie with kids, show them drinking Coke, like normal kids. Show them playing a Playstation, like normal kids. To do so grounds any movie, particularly fantasy movies, in some kind of day-to-day reality that the audience is immediately familiar with, so they can identify more with the characters onscreen.

in addition to the other comments, yes product placement can be annoying, but it takes money to makes movies. and special effects cost a lot of money. so in the case of this movie "Intel" gave money to the movie makers in exchange for using their logo.
what's the big deal? instead of saying a special thanks to intel at the end of the movie, they just incorporated it.

think of nascar. the drivers are sponsored by other companies and in return they put their logos on the cars.

i'm proud to admit to never have watched a "reality" tv program!

It's not product placement. The rabbit doesn't actually exist.

The rabbit doesn't exist- yet!

If yo want a movie without product placement, go watch Repoman with Emilio Estevez. And don't forget your can of DRINK and a box of FOOD.

It was funny. I wouldn't be surprised if 'intel' showed up in some futuristic realm, everything has to start somewhere.
