Here comes the remake...

Yes, another Hollywood remake of an Asian movie.
Actually the deal is not done yet but it's coming.

Oh and did you know that Charlize Theron will star in Lady Vengeance Hollywood version ? WTF ?

I'm sure this has been covered before... But, let's try again.

I read once, that Park Chan Wook actually approached Charlize Theron and offered her the remake of Sympathy for Mrs. Vengeance. He said something about wanting to see how the concept worked on a different culture.

I'd post the source, since I read it in the imdb boards, but I have no idea where. If someone remembers, please post it.

The Oldboy "remake" it's not going to be a remake, since Dreamworks is taking the original source for the adaptation. Apparently is going to be more like the manga instead of Park's film.

And... C'mon! there has been great remakes, (of course there'll be someone who does not agree with this) Cronenberg's The Fly, De Palma's Scarface... Hell, even Body Snatchers wasn't that bad.

I know that Charlize Theron was in talks, but I doubt that Park offered it to her.

Well, there is going to be no remake at the moment. It's fallen through.

But the "It's not a remake because it's based off of the manga" is pretty bull IMO, because there's no way Spielberg is making this with that in mind. The original film is already considered a modern classic, with the original being a footnote that no one knows about. Saying that it's based on it is just an excuse to stay away from the incest.

Besides, even if his intentions are purely to adapt the manga as opposed to cashing in on the original film, the reaction would be the same if someone tried to "readapt" the original Jaws novel. The original film is that well-known that it would be compared to what Park did no matter what.

LOL at the Japanese remake of Sideways. Watashiha kusomeruroo non de *beep* MERLOT!!! hahahahaha

Its retarded to remake a film that stands on its own. All they need to do is take the millions they would use to produce the film and market the *beep* thing here in America. It would save the production company millions.

In less subtitles truly turn audiences off. Which brings about a new line of questioning like: why are we so *beep* ethnocentric? English is great and all but *beep*, movies are an international art form.

These are some movies of mine. Enjoy!

I dunno, with remakes like these, it seems less of, "I think I can do this film better or put my own unique spin on it", and more, "This is a really good film. Let's try to emulate it as much as possible so we can make a good film of our own by putting in minimal work". Most of the time, nothing really comes out from it. The american "My Sassy Girl" went straight to DVD, I think.

The payoff for slogging through an hour of boring is never worth it.

I'm excited for a Lady Vengeance remake, especially if Park himself is involved! You've got to be optimistic. All remakes do is create more notority for their originals and give the director (of the original) more cash to create movies. I, for one, would love to see another new Park movie coming down the tubes.

But is Thirst being remade, or is this just on the incorrect board?

reply

If Mr. Park decided to learn English and direct it, it could work...lol don't see that as likely unfortunately.

I'm really angry about that Lady Vengeance thing (it's my favorite in the Vengeance trilogy), but I didn't really like this movie so they can do whatever they want with it.

Just to play Devils Advocate, but a ton of Korean movies are remakes/rip-offs of American movies.
