Here comes the remake...

Yes, another Hollywood remake of an Asian movie.
Actually the deal is not done yet but it's coming.

Oh and did you know that Charlize Theron will star in Lady Vengeance Hollywood version ? WTF ?

I don't get it. It's brand new and they're already salivating over it. Not to jump on the "not another remake" bandwagon or anything, but seriously. Are there any other countries that do as many remakes as the U.S.?

And as many times as I try I just can't picture Charlize Theron as Lady Vengeance.

"There is a high interest in the film, but we're still in the early stages of talks," said Suh. "As for Park's films, they are unique dramas with strong storylines, which is why they could work in other countries."

So, in other words, Park's films are unique dramas with strong storylines, so we're gonna rape them and steal someone else's intellectual proparty.

Makes me sometimes think i wasted 5 years of my life studying media when this is the attitude and trend in modern cinema

Uh, no. Park does not have to license his film if he does not want to. There is no 'stealing' of any sort going on - all of the US remakes of foreign movies are done so with the express permission of, and licensing fees paid to, the original copyright holder.

reply

yup, rape means that it was forced. It's prostitution where you get paid for it.
And it's no big deal people. It's not like they destroy the original copies. Retelling a story is not wrong. It is lazy maybe, but not evil.

If you are Anti-American: Admit you are doing it just to be cool. Does it feel good to hate?

well when you ask somone have they seen "the ring" the first thing they think about is the remake crap version. and you have to explain in most cases original even exists, so remaking movies does make peopel forget originals exist.

im not anti americal, im anti idiotic-remakes.

Give this guy/gal a virtual cookie.

I'm sick of people blaming "evil" Hollywood for the Asian movie remake craze when they should be pointing the finger at the people cashing in off the rights.

It's all about the money no money what country you are in.

Looks like Japan is finally trying to get revenge on Hollywood.

Don't underestimate Charlize. She'll do a good job. The problem is with certain cultural aspects which provided light (albeit black) humour, eg. towards the end with parents lining up to get bit of the action. In fact, that whole sequence will be butchered (pun intended) by a USA production. And what about the use of Moon Cake? How are they going to find a suitable metaphor?

Still, they can't take the original away from us.

reply

hey, what about the american remake of joint security area, which takes place on the US-mexican border? LOL

makes me so angry, so amazingly stupid

reply

Ha ha ha, that would be *beep* ridiculous.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to bash American cinema, but the simple fact is that these movies are phenomenal the way they are. Why can't people just suck it up, read the subtitles, and appreciate the beauty that has already been presented magnificently?

I mean, if we were to find a wonderful painting, would we only be able to show it to our friends if we re-painted it ourselves? Obviously though, it's all about the money. And it IS good to get these wonderful stories to larger audiences. But damn, just watch the originals! It's not like they're low quality, old, or poorly produced in any way!

reply

Honestly I think Charlize gets a bad rep because she's so attractive...kind of similar to Leonardo DiCaprio, I saw What's Eating Gilbert Grape and The Basketball Diaries with him and he was incredibly good in those...he's actually a solid actor (who's definitely taken some less than effective roles). Same with Charlize, look at Monster, could you have ever pictured her as the murderer Wuornos either? Maybe she'll do OK...it would only work if they had an incredibly good director and a spot on, perfect cast and crew...I think it's POSSIBLE for remakes to be damn fine movies (The Fly for example, I enjoy Cronenberg's masterpiece equally to the classic Vincent Price one, takes a camp sci-fi classic and made it a brilliant tragedy), but I agree it's EXTREMELY rare and generally only happens if fate just happens to drop a perfect crew onto the film.

I hate Hollywood for this. Vengeance trilogy is a unique piece of work, it can't just be remade as it's not just a story. The story can be retold but The film itself can only be inferior. It infuriates me!

reply

Nope. But Germany dubs all foreign films, which is just as awful. Maybe even more so, because it can completely ruin a great movie. It's like painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa.

Please tell me your joking!

I like to think of remakes as "cover song" versions of movies. I think Its fun to have a few versions of things. To see how some one else makes it their own.

reply

Cover songs suck. Very rarely do they have any significant upgrade, especially these days, with a bunch of talentless "bands" doing screamo or relying heavily on Pro Tools, or both.

reply

not ALL screamo bands are untalented :P
and not ALL cover songs suck.
primus do a cover of a metallica song...and improve on it i think..
and jeff buckley's version of hallelujah is better than the original

reply

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

reply

Yeah, Theron will be o.k. for Lady Vengence. Has the eyes of suffering/revenge. Remember that Geum-ja Lee cried quite a bit in that movie, and Theron can emote like no other. A bit tall and super modelesque, but remember her from Monster and North Country, so she could play an inmate as well.

I only wish Park Chan-Wook directs the re-boot as well.

as for Thirst, Im glad he has bounced back from "Im a Cyborg, but thats o.k." (gasp)

Seeing remakes of awesome films but translated badly breaks my heart. Friend had told me about a bollywood version of oldboy ... ARE YOU KIDDING ME BOLLYWOOD? it's not that i have a problem with bollywood, but for the audience watching that version, alot changes had to be made so the film wouldnt offend the viewing crowd. When i say changes i mean major changes to the plot.

The indian Oldboy remake/ripoff is called "Zinda" and it does not have the typical spontaneous song and dance numbers associated with Bollywood.

reply

Sir, I cannot even imagine how bad it must suck.

reply

As long as serious people are involved in remakes i'm fine with it. And it;s my mistake i consider them remakes cause they are not.The departed was something totally different from infernal affairs.

No, it was a remake.

There were some changes made to the plot, and it's filtered through the perspective of a different artist and worldview, but what remake isn't?
Much of The Departed was very similar to Infernal Affairs.
It doesn't matter that Scorsese was the director. It's a remake.

reply

the only good american remake of a foreign film ive seen is fistfull of dollars, they can do what they like though, hey, they might even do it justice!but probaly not.

reply

The amount of remakes really is getting ridiculous. TBH, the idea of the remake "harming" the original or whatever doesn't even bother me. I don't get all defensive of a movie I love being remade because no matter how bad or good a remake is, it will never be able to touch the original. It's simply the lack of original movies these days. Almost everything is either a remake or a flop. It's really sad that the only way people can think of making something good is by taking someone else's success and trying to make it work for them too.

reply

Exactly. Its retarded to remake a film that stands on its own. All they need to do is take the millions they would use to produce the film and market the *beep* thing here in America. It would save the production company millions.

In less subtitles truly turn audiences off. Which brings about a new line of questioning like: why are we so *beep* ethnocentric? English is great and all but *beep*, movies are an international art form.

These are some movies of mine. Enjoy!

I think on top of not wanting to read subtitles, it's just general ignorance. Some people honestly cannot grasp - and will refuse to try to grasp - another culture. When I'm watching a foreign movie, I immediately keep the culture of that place in mind, instead of only thinking of my culture and judging a movie based on those standards. Many people refuse to do that, and frankly, it's their loss.

yup... and even worse: Will Smith will be the US Oldboy!!!

reply

No... NO.... NOOO!!!!!!

Don't get me wrong, Will Smith has done some great stuff - In Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds, etc... Very powerful pieces. He's a great actor, or at least chooses great films to star in. But Oh Dae-Su? Oldboy? I can NOT see it. How the F_*_C_K could I imagine him getting involved in the scandalous Oldboy story arc?

You know what? It's ok. Like another person said - we'll always have the original. But I just hate to be that guy who keeps saying, "The original is SO MUCH better," or, "The book is SO MUCH better," when everyone else has only seen the mainstream film. It's obnoxious.
