'Becky Raped by the Horse Trainer'

After disclosing that their father beat them with a belt, Margot and Pauline say that their unseen sister, Becky, had it the worst because she was "raped by the horse trainer." Margot and Pauline then explode into hysterical laughter.

So...were they joking (and putting everyone else on in the room, especially Malcolm) when they said it? Or are they alluding to perhaps Becky having a consensual sexual relationship with the horse trainer, which their father disapproved and perhaps said it was rape?

If Becky was raped, it's not something that one should laugh at.

Any ideas?

I'm guessing it was the latter, otherwise, if nothing at all happened, what would have been the basis for the joke? Mind you, it's not elaborated on in any way so it's really left up to the audience's imagination. Maybe Becky just had a crush on the horse trainer, which was never acted upon?

It's really hard to say due the fact that both of the sister's seem to have a Personality Disorder. Before that scene, when they were upstairs they were talking about "poor Becky" in a serious manner. So they do agree that she has had a hardship, but maybe they were laughing because they didn't think this event actually qualified as being as traumatic as Becky perceived it? Or they think it is nothing compared to what they went through? They both tend to perceive themselves very much as victims and downplay what happens to those around them. Or it could just be a sick joke, wouldn't be surprised.

I think they were telling the truth but were high and were trying to laugh at their troubles to shield themselves from the pain. But would never admit that. They would probably say the laughter was a form of therapy. But I think it's really a shield. They even tried to include Malcolm and his male babysitter story, but he obviously had more self awareness.

I think they were laughing at Becky being raped by their horse trainer (horse trainers are usually dwarf like in appearance), I agree with what was said about personality disorders they just didn’t think the rape qualified as something traumatic because they felt more sorry for themselves, they obviously show signs of a history of sexual child abuse since they were kids, so they laugh off Becky’s alleged rape because relatively they’ve been through worse.

Pretty sure they were laughing at her being raped by a horse trainer.

I didn't get it either. I also didn't get what the intentions were of that boy who called Claude a homo and then proceeded to bite him. Was he in the closet himself? Did he want to rape him? Why didn't they report it? It was all very strange stuff going on down there.

My interpretation is that it was a dark joke about just how *beep* up their upbringing was. Didn't really happen, or had a shaky factual basis.

I thought that the "horse trainer" was a cover story made up by the parents of Margot, Pauline, and Becky. All three of them were probably sexually abused by their parents. But Becky got it the worst.
