why is there a black guy and not latino plating the main character?!

This is obsurd!!!! there is finally a main stream motion picture being produced about reggaeton and they have a moreno playing a puerto rican?!! wtf?!! I'm so mad! as if there arent enough latino actors out there to play the part... It seems to me that the character may be mixed, half rican half black... but even so, they could have found a real latino to play the part. and omarion of all people? Come on! I cant imagine him having a real appriciation or understanding of reggaeton or Puerto Rican culture. and another thing, I am a Puerto Rican from the Bronx, and being a latina from the BX I can tell you right now Omarion is gonna have to work hard and be a really really great actor to pull of playing a Puerto Rican from the South Bronx. Because from what i've seen in of him in the past, he doesnt convince me that he can pull it off. He doesnt look like a new yorker at all... especially not a Puerto Rican one!

hellllooooo! where do you think they dumped all the black peopole they stole from africa??? the caribbean!!! therefore, many many puerto ricans are BLACK. now if you're pissed off that they didn't get "authentic" afro puerto ricans, that's a whole different story.

but seriously, i recommend you learn some more about the history of your people.

IS NOT ABOUT THE RACE. IS THAT HE IS NOT LATINO SO HE WOULDNT UNDERSTAND REGGAETON
HE PROBABLY THINKS LIKE EVERY AMERICAN THAT REGGAETON IS DADDY YANKEE.

but reggaeton has a history dating back to early 90's and is part of puerto rican dominican, panama, etc.. music history.

yes tego calderon is black and latinos from the carribean (caribeƱos) come in all colors and shape but to have someone like omarion play a hispanic role is kinda a slap in the face everyone has seen his films he isnt a good actor. He hasnt even developed himself as a musician yet because all his material is written for him.He
is a product like b2k was. So this might just make the film very campy and not real.Just go see daddy yankees reggaeton movie it comes out in february.

reply

i think that reggaeton is el general. and el general is BLACK.

reggaeton is a total bite off of dancehall and i think you're really reading way too much into it.

reply

I understand what you're saying but what they can play us but we can't play them?!

Zoe Saldana played a black American in that movie with Ashton Kutcher.

What's more dangerous than sincere ignorance?

reply

hey finefine the only thing they dumped in the carribean was black ppls dead bodys trust they werent alive...yea and there is puerto ricans that are black....the whole thing is why the hell are they gonna get sum1 black not even a litttle puerto rican who cant act and cant rap 2 play in this movie thats bull shyt

reply

my question to you is why would you ever expect this movie to be good anyway? all these type of musical genre flicks suck.

reply

ahahaah thats true, however is not about the music but the movie I guess.

Besides, seriously that music started in Panama, so because of that do i have to feel offended? or lets go back back it came from true Reggae from Jamaica and back back I bet it came from some other place or culture as well.

However I dont see why not doing this movie since they've created stupid movies about rappers, hip hop, rockers, so rap, reggaeton, etc.. same stuff I guess.

I think you are getting race and ethnicity mixed up. if Tupac was born in Puerto Rico then his ethnicity would be Latin, but his race would be Black do see what I am saying. Being latin is not a racial term it is an ethnic term. When I ask someone what race they are saying I am French, English or Italian or Spanish is not it, the are ethnic, because cacuasian, african, asian, and meso american peoples speak these languages. One more thing the media never show any respect to black people of latin heritage, they are invisible in latin countrys. Go to brazil which has the largest black population outside of Africa, and you will see what i am talking about.

So what else is new? We've had white people playing latinos: "West Side Story", "Scarface" and "Carlito's Way"

Now I guess is black people now.

Whats really absurd is that the character is from the South Bronx. The Reggeaton artists should be from the Ghettos of Puerto Rico. Thats were it developed and became popular. Then it went to the U.S.

But honestly, the caracter should not only be from Puerto Rico, born and raised, but also BROWN (Which is white for PR), kinda like Daddy Yankee, Wisin y Yandel. MOST reggeaton artist have that skin complexion. Its only obvious because truly black puertorican, that look like Omarion, are very few. Tego Calderon is one of those few that come from Loiza, the only mayority black municipality (county) in PR.

Just leave it to American movie makers to totally get latino culture and music wrong.

Tring to describe latin culture in one sentence is impossible since there are so many different aspects from mexico, central america, the caribbean, south america and the philippines all have a spanish flavor. But the thing is, Hispanic culture is more of a clash of dozens of cultures into one. ex. Spain, Portugal, Africa, and Native cultures.

The cat that played Pito should of been the lead....I've seen his work and he's a well trained actor....Cisco Reyes is the one to look out for.....forget about Omarion....I say just go check it out before you condem it....

okay i stopped reading some posts, cus some people get way into it. but i agree with the original post iom not racist, but i mean does he even know what puerto rico means. like tego is black, but he is part of latino culture and does kno about habichuelas and merengue and reggaeton. omarion is afdrican american, know latin blood in him. thats all shes saying its liek getn a white dude to play cesar chavez, even if he can pass of as a latino its not that great. duuuhhh

reply

I agree with you 100%!! I bet this would've been a really good hyped up film if it actually starred a puerto rican-or at least a latino! But to have OMARION playing the leading role is a total joke!A really talented new latino actor would've been great so there can be a new latin celebrity who can represent!!
