On the beach, why does he kill himself? Does he realize that he cannot control himself and is unable to change, is he fearful of further punishment and is he also consumed with guilt and shame that he cannot live anymore after all of this?

And also...

Is it entirely understandable that the woman actually cradles him and cries as he lies there dying?

And cinematically speaking, further spoilers...

Did that scene in a way remind you of another German film called "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" (1997) albeit it was two men with terminal cancer who are guilty of several robberies that die there albeit due to illness?
