How is this movie not revered more?

I love it. I mean the cast is incredible. Everything Robert Duvall touches is brilliant. Mark Wahlberg is a great actor, Eva Mendes and Joaquin was brilliant in this movie and it makes you wonder why he quit acting.

As far as mob movies go, this isn't the Godfather, nor am I saying it is. It isn't Goodfellas either. But in my opinion it isn't any worse than American Gangster or The Departed, two of my other favourites. Why it never gets the respect is beyond me.

That scene in the coke factory when Vadim is suspicious of Bobby is one of the most tense build ups in movie history. I never understand how it doesn't get the respect.

Could be the best film that came out of America in the last 10 years!

This film is so well done, that I felt myself"in each room""every scene."
If one seeks rare quality...seldom seen...this is it.

Robert Duvall did not belong.

Honestly, I don't get it either. It's one of the better crime dramas/cop movies that came out of the 2000's.

"Believe me; if I could shoot myself a quizzical look right now, I would."

Underrated. Scenes that were perfectly executed:

1) Opening scene with Blondie song.
2) Blindfolded drive to Russian drug complex & guy with fake eye cutting up coke
3) Car chase scene. Joaquin seeing his dad get shot.
4) Mark Wahlberg getting snuck up on and shot
5) The whole dinner scene where Joaquin talks to his club owner and his wife.

I think Gray did an amazing job with the cinematography/ color/ tone and actually made it seem like I was watching the dark side of the 80s. Seemed very dream like and believable.

8/10

I don't think it deserves to be revered. I like the film a lot because it has great performances and many original and extremely effective scenes, and great cinematography. However, a less than fully realised script and/or poor editing make for a less than completely satisfying film overall. In the end, it wins me over for its strengths while leaving me unable to recommend it to others unreservedly.

It is not more revered because it is not that good. I found it tortuously slow. The car chase was intense but the rest of the movie was annoying.
