One other problem (spoiler)

When Ben left the house he called for back up. Meanwhile, he goes back to the house where the wife jabs him twice in the neck with a needle. This had to take some time to wear off and still no back up. Okay, I'm done except I think Angie Harmon play a very scary villain, indeed!

yeah! she was really creepy, wasn't she? Especially in that part where the girl is sneeking around the house hiding/escaping Angie Harmon and all of a sudden Angie Harmon is walking right behind her. :/

there's a few other glaring plot holes as well such as them being allowed to foster/adopt after repeated child deaths, phones not allowing you to block outgoing emergency service calls, badly done red herrings (gun in basement wall, seeing somebody outside) and of course the usual quickly recovering from things that should cause serious injury which is so common in movies it barely counts
it's a shame really, because most wouldn't take much effort to fix and would have really helped improve an otherwise fairly decent movie

seeing somebody outside

This wasn't a red herring. The foster parents wanted the kids to think danger lurked outside, so they set the whole thing up; sort of like "The Village." The stranger lurking outside the window was either the mother or a hireling.
