Racist movie

this movie is racist. without no doubt.

At the very begining of the movie it says that:

the Turks has slaughtered and enslaved half the population of Hungary.

Where does this come from? Turks neighter slaughtered nor enslaved "half the population of Hungary"! The Turkish Hungarian wars were between armies of the countries. Turks never attacked on villiges and civilians. If half the population of Hungary was gone even before Turks conquered entire Hungary then there would be no Hungarian after the conquest and i don't even mention hundreds of years of Ottoman rule in Hungary.

such a silly smear and defamation campaign by Americans by means of holywood. if producers had asked Hungarians, even Hungarians -i'm sure- would reject this racist propaganda.

i don't mention many lines insulting Turkish culture and Turkish people deliberately. Each are unbelieveable. but the line i mentioned above which appears at the begining of the film is a good example of "Obama governed US diplomacy".

shame on you!

As a Turk myself, I found your comment funny. Just calm down and read some history books before commenting.

Yes, at that time Ottoman was at war with Hungary. The wars continued more than hundred and fifty years (1526-1699). Eventually Ottoman won and counquered most of the lands till their retreat. And much or less, any nation invading a rival country kills -or at that time enslaves- the civilians. Whether it was ordered to the army or not. It's a historic fact. It's not a fact anyone would like but it's a fact of war. Not any nation could deny that. The wars and conquests always happened that way in the past and today unfortunately it's still happening that way too.

I'm not an expert but far as we know, the slaughter and enslavement rate wasn't half the population of Hungary. Maybe that line was added for a dramatic effect. But don't forget that it's only a movie, you can't learn history from movies. And I didn't find that line or any other part of the movie racist.

I agree that some movies are pretty racist and insulting to foreigner cultures. But this isn't one of them. Actually I think, the most racist movie of 2009 was Disctrict 9. The script was full of insulting dialogues about the aliens :)

There is no deliberate racism in this film. It pretty accurately shows the situation that was present at that time. Otoman Turks were seen as huge threat to Holly Roman Empire and whole western civilization, so they were feared and hated and it shows in the film.

reply

by western civilization, do you mean civilized people? because history tells us that the westerners were at a dark age while the Ottoman empire was at its peak

IN THE END THERE WILL BE ONLY CHAOS

reply

That's absolute nonsense. In Europe there were people like Shakespeare, Cervantes, Caravaggio, Johannes Kepler or Galileo Galilei when Elizabeth Báthory lived. In this era, Western Europe had a clearly more advanced culture than the Ottoman Empire.

You have no idea what the word "racist" means, which makes you look like an idiot.

reply

And you're a muckraking idiot. No doubt. What has all this got to do with Hollywood? What has this got to do with racism anyway?

reply

Turks aren't a race, are they? More like a nation.

reply

Yes, because Turkey is the modern name for that part of the world. In general the word can only be used for groups of people, such as Caucasian, who share a common genetic pattern.

From Dictionary dot com: "a human population partially isolated reproductively from other populations, whose members share a greater degree of physical and genetic similarity with one another than with other humans."

People of Mongoloid descent have the epicanthic fold in their eyelids, and that is a racial characteristic. But you can't extrapolate from that that they are, say, Japanese or Chinese because several national groups share that feature.

Turks are often over-sensitive when it comes to these matters. I blame it all on Thanksgiving.

the OP has many hysterical and anti-historic rants here. He sees "anti-turkism" -- even int he prince of Persia which was very popular and well reviewed in Turkey!

Political correct diatribes must be confronted and denounced. This comment is utterly inappropriate, as is the reference to Obama. Wait a minute: isn't the "Obama governed US diplomacy" bit also racist? My god, I think so. And just think, you don't even have Hollywood to blame for your politically incorrect statement. It's all you - this racist sentiment comes from your ingrained lack of respect for people of color! LOL. What a nifty little hypocrite, Lycian. Or are you merely a troll? That might be it. Why else have you not reentered the discussion here?
