US Version

I watched the US Pilot, and enjoyed it. It wasn't as good the British version, but it was still pretty good.
But I think the reasons that it didn't last was that the British one is amazing, and it came first. If the US version was first, I think if the US was first it would be successful. Also they tried replicating it almost word for word and shot for shot.

I don't think the US version would have compared if it had been picked up for a full series. It's hard to imagine ANY actor being better at playing Douglas than Matt Berry.

The Office.

Pilot and first few eps were essentially the UK scripts, painful to watch. Then the writers got it, and began to Americanize it. Worked brilliantly. Always hated having to say that, but credit where its due. Ok, it got lame in the end, but, how many eps? At least 4 season were good.

Lesson? The IT Crowd could have worked as a US version. It just needed writers who understood it and could make it relevant to Americans.

We already had Big Bang Theory as our nerd/geek tribute.

The thing is, the Americans who would get it have already seen the UK version. I'm not sure who they are going after in the US market, but apparently there are a whole bunch of people who haven't seen the UK version of House of cards and believe the US version is the best thing ever. Sad.

Have any of you seen "Episodes," where they openly mock Hollyweird's inability to remake these shows in the US?

reply

Episodes is brilliant. Love it.

There's a US version?

There was a pilot about 10 years ago, but it wasn't picked up. Here's a link http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xmjpk4_the-it-crowd-us-pilot_fun?star t=5. It was almost word for word the first episode of the British series and starred Richard Ayoade reprising his role as Moss, and Joel McHale from Community as Roy. It's probably worth a look for fans of the show. It's really weird to watch the "real" Moss doing the same scenes with different people around him. Don't watch it if your high, it could mess with your mind. Apparently NBC is trying to re-boot the series again!

Why not just show the original U.K. version in the U.S.? It's not as if it's in French or something.
