Why take so much from the original but then....

Have such a bewildering strange ending? I loved the original sisters and was satisified that the remake was keeping the story intact although with a few minor embelishments here and there. It even made a little more sense than the original did. Even the switch of the pullout couch to big screen tv was okay with me.
So I was PUMPED to see how they would play out the ending. The original I thought was a devious little finale. But the payoff in the new film never came. Instead it went totally arthouse instead. I was stunned. Then I listened to the commentary where the director explained his vision so much which never came across onscreen.
So if you're going to do a straight remake why destroy the ending?????

HAH! I like that the original didn't take itself so seriously, it was what it was. This version took itself very seriously and therefore actually ruined itself. Especially the very end.

I agree wholeheartedly with your entire post.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

I've got to see the original now. This was such a mess. I watched it purely because Chloƫ Sevigny was in it, and I feel sort of embarrassed on her behalf now.

If the original ending is better, that'll make all the difference right there. This was just lame and sad. Did not work at all.

The kids are a mess! You brought them home exhausted and pretentious!

Can you explain briefly what the vision was the director talked about that didn't end up on screen at all? I'm curious to know what he was going for.
