Can anyone tell me if the main characters in this film were actually historical people or were they just created for the story??

reply

I'm sure they were just created for the story.

Polo players were fact, Hungary won the Melbourne olympics wp final not for the first and last time :).

reply

The polo players were actual people.

Kata Dobo's character was fictional.

reply

Yeah, but was the relationship between the polo player and the girl real, or was that fiction. Did he really fight in the revolution and then go to the Olympics or was that just an entertaining story?

Imre Nagy was real. Rákosi - the one people would throw into Donau - was real.
All those people who got killed was real. The AVO was real.

About Maláter:In 1956 he was Colonel and commander of an armoured division stationed in Budapest. He was sent to suppress the rebellion, but on making contact with the insurgents during the Hungarian Uprising he decided to join them, helping to defend the Kilian Barracks. He was the most prominent member of the Hungarian military to change sides.
He was executed along with Imre Nagy and others in a Budapest prison on 16 June 1958, on charges of attempting to overthrow the Hungarian People's Republic.

Viki got executed - like lots of other people at the time. The character portrayed all the Hungarian revolutionary women in 1956 and I think she did a good job.

I was there and saw most of it, a lot more than I care to remember. This film is very true to history.

This film is very true to history.
It certainly is. The game for instance is reconstructed very much along the lines of what happened at the Melbourne Olympics. But all the main onscreen characters and their back stories are fictional.🐭

Falk Viki's character could have been based on either Szeles Erika or Tóth Ilona.

Erika was 15 years old and died during the fights. Ilona was 24 and a graduating med student who was posthumously awarded "doctor" to honor her memory. She was executed in 1957. There were other women who died during/as a result of the revolution too.

I know this is a necro-post, but I just wanted to say thanks for the additional information, because I purposely came here to ask if Viki was being executed, but given that she represented the women who were being executed, you answered that question.
