To everyone hating on this movie...

...shut the heck up!

Geez, at least Lucas spent his money (over 100 million dollars) to create a movie that no other studio would touch because they felt it was a black movie. Lucas made it very universal and will break even one day. I don't care how authentic it is, because there was a story that needed to be told that no one would tell and he told it...and I applause him for that.

I'm a black guy and fell that the movie wasn't great. Yes, it was very cheesy and overly dramatic at times. I can easily say that this would be a great made for TV movie. But, that's not important. It's an overall good movie at best and there's plenty of intense action. I left the movie theater feeling great to be from Alabama and see this movie.

If you hate this movie, then you're a closet racist. This it.

This is a much better discussion than this thread.

Time, Dr. Freeman? Is it really that time again?

To quinterrya,
Stop accusing everyone being a racist just because they don't like the movie. I hate this movie because it was very poorly made. The storyline is poor despite having a great historical subject behind it. The storytelling is flat and unfocused. The character development is next to none. The acting is poor and uninspired. The dialogue is poorly written and badly delivered. The one-dimensional jive talk just ain't gonna cut it when you try to portray well-educated black people who made it through Tuskegee. And the special effects, for crying out loud, is more video game than realism. Planes didn't fly like that in those days and still don't fly like that today. It's WWII not Star Wars. People dislike bad black film the same way they dislike bad white film, and appreciate good black films when one is made well. There was an HBO movie made years ago called "The Tuskegee Airmen". It is 100 times better.

If you honestly believe his story about studios not buying it due to race than you are a naive person who wants to believe there is still racism in Hollywood when it isn't. It's all a cheap marketing ploy to get an people to see this crappy movie thinking they are protesting racism. All black cast films do fine. And George Lucas is too huge of a name to turn down.

They don't do fine because they make huge box office, they do fine because they are low budget. The only all-black war movie I recall prior to this one is "Miracle at St. Anna", which grossed 9 million on a 45 million budget. That's tanking by any definition. And all black movies that approach a $100 million return are rare--it's quite possible that Red Tails is going to end up the highest grossing all-black movie of all time. If it succeeds in making a big profit then expect to see imitators.

"Geez, at least Lucas spent his money (over 100 million dollars) to create a movie that no other studio would touch because they felt it was a black movie."

You know, at first, i thought the studious declining to back this movie had something to do with discrimination, but after i unfortunately got suckered into seeing it, i can clearly see a valid reason for their reluctance. This movie was a total piece of *beep*. I refuse to believe that the actual Tuskegee Airmen were anything like the bland one-dimensional caricatures portrayed in that movie. True heroism is a little more intricate than thrash talking with your buddies on the radio. This movie had far far too much cheese to swallow in one two hour sitting and no substance at all.

The sad thing is, if racism had a hand in the studios' decision, they can now simply say 'we felt it was a bad investment' and get out of the corner scot-free. And it is. Not because it's a movie with an all black cast, but because it sucks, pure and simple. Otherwise, why are more people not rushing to see it? Ultimately, this movie is a disservice to the memory of the real airmen and will probably be detrimental to the production of other movies with minority casts. You might like the movie, to each his own is what i say. But in reality, Lucas screwed the African-American community over and you're thanking him for it.

Please see "THe Tuskeegee Airmen" by HBO and then come back here to compare the two.

The story HAD been told before. HBO also told "Mrs. Evers Boys" about the Tuskeegee experiment, and "The Soul of the Game" about the Negro Baseball league.

All three of these are great made-for-tv films, that could have easily been on the big screen.

What I dont get is theres tons of white guy heroics WWII based films and no one nitpicks for accuracy or whines about the cheesy dialogue which there generally is in most war films anyway aside from a select few.

Why can't there be a war film that depicts soldiers of color during WWII? They were there and also committed many acts of valor. Not only that but in many cases had to deal with racism from the people they were fighting alongside who wouldnt even give them their basic human rights stateside. Also, the Tuskegee Airmen film came out in 1995...and though it was good, why should that be the ONLY cinematic representation of these men that fought for this country.

Its just funny how whites like to just marginalize and sideline anyone else's contributions in US history.

Most of the recent releases are gone over pretty well. Saving Private Ryan, for example, has been nit-picked to death.

The studios didn't want it because it was a crappy movie. George is full of it if he thinks the studios would turn down a good movie just because of a black cast. There have been MANY SUCCESSFUL movies with an all black cast (look at Tyler Perry for example), and despite George's claim to the contrary there are a number of other action oriented movies with an all or nearly all black cast.

It is pretty sad that you are running around saying that if we didn't like a lousy movie it is because we are racist. I think it is more offensive and racist to require people to like a movie under threat of being considered racist if you don't.

@Alpinia - Big studios greenlight plenty of sh**ty movies every year. Look at "Green Hornet". The movie wasn't an instant classic but I don't think it was flat-out horrible either. I would consider it mediocre. Anyways, I do think race does play some part in Hollywood studio decisions. I mean, it's not exactly like Hollywood doesn't get incredibly tight all of a sudden whenever a movie with a black lead cast is talked about other than some silly Tyler Perry movie or movies where the black lead is a black comedian.

I have not seen this movie, and will never see this movie because I can tell from the trailers that it sucks out loud. Too much CGI trying to substitute for a good script.

If you want to see a good movie about these guys see "The Tuskegee Airmen." It was made in 1995 and is historically fairly accurate. It has a great cast, was well written, and well made. It get's an IMDB rating of 7.1. I gave it an 8. Red Tails gets a 5.8 which is probably generous.

You probably voted for Barry (and I don't mean Marion) because he was black didn't you? Racist.
