How did you get into metal?

Im not sure if this is already a topic but im just realy interested to know how people got into metal. For me it was to be different so i started listening to Jimi Hendrix, Steppenwolf and others since everyone was listening to rap and pop and because i just didn't see what was so good about them. Then a friend introduced me to a Symphony X song and it just grabbed me and ive been listening to Death, Thrash and pretty much every genre ever since. Anyway i think it'll be interesting so go ahead and also say which band realy got you into metal...oh and STAY METAL!!!

my music taste only began to develop when I turned 16. I used to listen a lot to melodic rock songs those days, such as Coldplay and Radiohead's first three albums. I was fairly neutral to metal, until I heard the song 'Shed' from Meshuggah. It hooked, and I started listening to more of Meshuggah's work (not quite a 'gradual' intro, lol). From there (while still listening to slow rock and melodic rock, mixed with some electronic) I diverged to more metal, although I never really got into the 'metal mainstream' if there is such a thing. I like bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Opeth, Dream Theater, Dragon Force, Dimmu Borgir, Rammstein, Motley Crue, White Zombie, Zyklon, Metallica until the Black Album... I also like a lot of grunge such as Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Tool. I'm not quite a metal head, but I do really enjoy metal and respect it's community.

I think it all began when I accidentally downloaded COF's version of Hallowed Be Thy Name..
And the rest is history..

I had a really gradual progression, starting with some hard rock/ alternative metal bands like Finger Eleven, Audioslave and Staind, then a bit harder, into stiff like Godsmack and Drowning Pool, then into bands like Stone Sour and Slipknot, then I discovered older bands like Metallica, RATM, Pantera, Soundgarden, White Zombie, Motorhead, Alice in Chains, etc. Now I listen to stuff from all of those genres, from thrash to grunge to hard rock or whatever.

I was into rap and I made fun of my friends for listening to metal and saw all metal as thrash type death metal. They convinced me to listen to some metal now it's all I listen to infact I play heavey metal/death metal type stuff on guitar.

My sister got me into Queen which was the first band I was ever really a fan of. Before then, I was not really interested in music at all. I kept checking out heavier and heavier stuff, and now I listen to mostly death/ thrash, some black metal. Though I still listen to Quenn if I'm feeling nostalgic, lol!

Its like a big tidal wave of jam coming towards us, only its jam made out of old women!

I never used to care much for music, then I heard Enter Sandman by Metallica thanks to the ECW wrestler The Sandman, and I remembered my sisters boyfriend liking Sad But True by them, so I got that song, then kept getting more songs, and getting more bands, now I listen to anything from psychadelic rock to black metal.

I was around before metal so I grew up with it and it stuck. I'm 50 and will never let go of metal and grunge.
