Who else has been queer on screen?

I don't really know where else to post this, so shall put it up here, so it jus doesn't seems right slottin' it anywhere else... I m interested to know which other mainstream male actor did gay characters other than Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in Brokeback Moutain... films like these are an extreme rarity in my country so therefore it isn't easy for me to get to see them... a friend of mine once told me that Spiderman's Tobey Maguire had done one before but she wasn't too sure also... anybody can shed any light on that? Thanks !

Lets not forget Ian Somerhalder in "The Rules of Attraction" and Bobby Cannavale in "Shall we Dance". OK neither of them are ground breaking performances but still worth a mention! Oh and wasn't Dean Cain gay in some feel good movie???

reply

ok i didn't read this whole thread so i duno if it's been meantioned or not but Willem Dafoe play a homosexual in The Boondock Saints.

and i saw Interview With the Vampire meantioned. i don't think you can really call that homosexual. in Anne Rice's stories, the vampires can feel love for pretty much everybody, so you could call them bisexual, and in the books this tends to get shown a lot and in one of them in particular it gets fairly graphic, but it's not hinted enough in the movie Interview With the Vampire to really call them homosexual or bisexual. it seems more portrayed as a plutonic or family type of love in the movie.

Dean Cain plays a gay character in The Broken Hearts Club as does John Mahoney (Frasier's dad), Zach Braff, Justin Theroux and Timothy Olyphant.

reply

Will Smith in Six Degrees of Separation

Kevin Spacey in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Surprised that hadn't come up, especially with Jude Law already mentioned for it. Gil Bellows in The Weather Man. Who else? You might count Hayden Christensen in Life As A House, but that's more likely acknowledged as forced, or bi at most. Colin Farrell is bi in Alexander (I know he was already mentioned for a different movie) and so was Jared Leto. R. Lee Ermey along with Jack Black in Saving Silverman. I know there are more, I just can't remember them.

Jonny Lee Miller.

Jude Law in Wilde. He played Lord Alfred Douglas, lover of Oscar Wilde.

Hugh Grant in Maurice.
Long before Brokeback Mountain, there was this movie about two men falling in love, but in Post Victorian England. I saw this film as a kid on The Movie Channel and it shocked me to say the least, but in a contemplative way. Maurice is definitely one you should check out.

You're a marked man, Jack Sparrow. July 7th!

Has anyone mentioned:

Daniel Day Lewis in 'My Beautiful Launderette.'
Bruce Willis in 'Day Of The Jackle.'
Christian Bale in 'American Psycho' is bi (see toilet scene or read book)
Peter Finch in 'Sunday Bloody Sunday.'
James Spader and Elias Koteas (plus the rest of the cast) in 'Crash' have same sex love.
Whoopi in 'The Colour Purple.'
Alan Bates and Oliver Reed in 'Women In Love'
Anthony Perkins in 'Psycho'

Other movies with gay sex, characters or homoerotic overtones:

Midnight Express
Midnight Cowboy
Diamonds Are Forever (nasty stereotypes unfortunately)
Apt Pupil (Elias Koteas offers 'comfort')
Ben Hur
Sparticus
Hitchcock rarely went without gay characters in his films - in fact, they were often the leads.

I think the points been made to redundancy in this thread. The list of homosexual connotations in film are endless because Hollywood has always had many actors, directors and producers who were and are gay.

Let's try to find films without some gay connection - it'll be a lot more challenging!

Don't forget Kevin McKidd & Tom Hollander in Bedrooms and Hallways, too!

reply

How about Dan Futterman in Urbania?

reply

Here's an obscure one - Roy Scheider and William Devane in "Marathon Man". Early in the film, Scheider's character talks on the phone to an unseen character named Janey telling Janey how much he missed them. Later in the movie we find out that Devane's character's nickname is Janey, shortened from Janeway, his surname.

Also Robert Redford and Roddy McDowall in "Inside Daisy Clover".

A couple that haven't yet been mentioned...

Harry Hamlin in 'Making Love' (1982)
John Ritter in 'Sling Blade' (1996)

Jeeeesus! You are SO not allowed to consider yourselves movie fans.

Frank Fitts! US Marine Corps!

C'mon. American Beauty is one of those films that we've all seen. And Chris Cooper happened to play a self-loathing deep-closet haw-maw-sexual.

But I'm glad everyone remembered Agent Smecker of Boondock Saints.

LOOK! An undead monkey!

reply

And dont forget Will Smith in Six Degrees of Separation (1993) quite an explicit sex seen too!
