We get it - there was racism in America decades ago

By reliving it over and over again, all that's happening is a new generation of black youth - who possibly haven't even experienced racism - are having racially charged emotions thrust upon them.

As someone outside the USA, it's amazing to observe this enormous inferiority complex that blacks seem to have in that country... I wish the black community would take a page from the history of the Irish or Jews in early America - it's a road map for success in the USA.

As someone who hasn't seen the movie, maybe you should bite your tongue. I've read from people who have seen it that it doesn't have much to do with racism.

What is, blending in with whites and joining in on the oppression of blacks? It's kind of hard for blacks to do, though some try.

If that's the case, why then did they showcase in the television previews such racially inflammatory and combative dialog?

reply

Dumb ass comment...completely baseless and unintelligible.

Wow. I'm completely amazed that someone is as stupid as you. When I read this comment I was like what? Even most whites in America aren't stupid enough to say that racism was decades ago. But I guess that explains it. your a stupid person "outside of the USA" who has no idea what kind of racist sh!t actually goes on here. So keep your stupid self away because we dont like your kind. the stupid kind.

WOW!!!!!!!!! It's people like you that are the downfall of civilzation!!!!!!!! You talk about African Americans being stupid but you don't even know how to spell!!!! I'm so sick and tired of racists like you stereotyping African Americans, how dare you insult African Americans the way that you have just done. African Americans DO try to make it in this world but when they have to face people like you, the sad fact is, the only way out for them is to sell drugs or do things things that, yes I agree are unlawful. But you can't blame them for trying to make it.... and one last thing, it's not African Americans who are afraid of change,(An overt fact from the past) but it's people like you who are the ones that are truly afraid. I really hope that you do take this into consideration.

"African Americans DO try to make it in this world but when they have to face people like you, the sad fact is, the only way out for them is to sell drugs or do things things that, yes I agree are unlawful."

It's pretty defeatist to say that black Americans (I'm including islanders, etc., not just African Americans) "have" to engage in illegal acts to find a "way out." I go to one of the most racially and ethnically diverse schools in the country, and many of the students - black, white, hispanic, asian - that I know are working there asses off, have full time jobs, support both their own education AND their families, etc. One thing that none of them do is sell drugs or engage in other illegal acts. Saying "Oh, African Americans are discriminated against, therefore they have an excuse to mess up" is covertly racist, it implies that the race cannot do better. If being discriminated against is what keeps people from being successful, how do you explain the number of successful gays, fat people, women? How do you explain why Oprah Winfrey is the richest woman in showbiz? Or that kids of every race who are four years younger than me are my coworkers?

Most of the racist people I have met while at my school have been black. They hate whites and any blacks (aka my friends) who associate with them. I'm tired of people making excuses for this. Grow up and take responsibility already.

~~"Americans seem to be convinced that they know more than any other country in the world, despite being probably the laziest nation."

It's funny but I usually see it as the other way around. I see the avg. American as being more curious abt. other countries than anything else. We ask a lot of questions. And we are far from being the laziest nation, well thats just silly."~~

I really didn't mean for that to be offensive to anyone, and I'm not trying to provoke a fight. I just mean that in the land of plenty and opportunity, we have the most obese nation in the world where the number one killer is heart disease due to our poor lifestyle choices of the majority of the population.

There's just a feeling like the US has been spoiled for too long and doesn't really take advantage of what they have, not to mention the feeling of undeserved superiority.

jyjjyc sounds like she wants to be white so bad, but as a half black person that will not happen. Witha broad stroke she blames the problems of race on black people who won't change ...what like she has ? a kiss up who has to do things the way her friends do them ignoring a culture that might be different but just as beautiful. In terms you can understand, Rock on dude, Panic at the Disco are so in!!! God forbid you should like something by Donnell Jones. Don't think you are unique, I see your oreo cookie kind quite a bit. When I tell you that they could care less about the Irish or Italian you have in you, you'd argue, but when you catch them letting you know that you blackest as the blackest person, you might get it a little.

Why do posts have to get so personal and argumentative...seriously what does that accomplish then waste time and people having to READ it??

Racism is alive and well everywhere. It may not be on the street but definitely in institutions and organisations. Together with it is classism which is intraracial and in my opinion worse.
I liked the racism issues brought out in this movie and applaud such topics being dealt with. It was directed by an African who now resides in the USA which made me proud.

I actually think that the African American community in Hollywood is more together and supportive of one another. I could be wrong but it is what I see. I mean Terrence is a light skinned guy and Bernie Mac is darker skined and they form part of the African American community. Outside of the USA like in Africa they would not be in the same race.

And as for race issues being brought out in this day and age I think it highlights just how far we have come and how much has been achieved. It may not be the best place but it is better and that deserves some appreciation.

lastly on the race issue I believe it pushes a person to look at someone as an individual not as part of a group about which the person has preconceived notions(the latter part of my statement forms the basis of racism).

Racism still exists today. It is not always as blatant and obvious but it does exist. Anyone who disputes that is not living in America. Any African American who says they have never experienced racism is probably too dumb to realize it. I thought that I had not either until I became an adult. Also, Jewish and Irish people could and can always assimilate as where African Americans can not. Having said that, I think we as African Americans need to work hard, empower ourselves with education and strive to make changes within our own communities first then we can attempt to change the perception we have in this country. We can not buy into stereotypes as we often do. We need to see more educated, well spoken and well groomed black men on tv and movies versus the "thugged out, gold tooth characters that white people expect!

reply

THANK YOU!
Finally a well stated opinion instead of just calling the person stupid for having a view.

People tend to forget that racism doesn't just exist as cacausion intolerance to african americans. It's also intolerance to hispanics, and asian people, and whether you believe it or not, white people are subjected to racism as well; maybe not nearly as much as African Americans, but everyone has expirienced direct racism at some point in their lives.

And let's face it, Black empowerment has been shoved aside for the latest string of black wannabe ghetto rappers on MTV, and obviously, if young people see on the television adovacating guns, womanising, and gangs, they're not going to see that as black empowerment, they just see it as something that they should be.

If people really want to see the defeat of racism, then there needs some serious breaking down of stereotypes.

Best example of breaking down stereotypes: Kele Okereke.

It doesn't help when "thugged out, gold tooth" rappers want to help reinforce that sterotype by jumping on board for movies, with little to zero acting experience, other than their music careers. They could just as easily turn the part down, but they want to help build up their music careers, getting as much face/screen time as possible.

I've yet to see Morgan Freeman accept a role as a "thugged out, gold tooth" character, or Denzel Washington. Coincidentally, both are Academy Award winners for their acting ability...

First, the statement that you made that you think the entire black community in the U.S. has an inferiority complex is ridiculous. How can you make such a generalization on such a large and diverse population of people? Have you met and psychoanalyzed the majority of them? Quite a feat.

Second, but no less narrow is the thought that by looking back at pieces of truth in our history, that we are thrusting racially charged emotions at black youth. Come on. How is showing "black youth" that it is possble to overcome predjudice and accomplish something positive bad?

As well, How can we possibly grow if we do not take a good hard look at what we as a society have done wrong, learn from it, and make changes. Sure, it is uncomfortable to see the nasty things that we have done. Looking at what we as a nation allowed, actually encouraged in our own backyards is hard, and of course who wants to take responsibility for that? But it does not change the fact that racism happened and in so many ways still is happening today.

In this day and age we have incredible technology that gives us the ability to communicate as never before. That is a true gift. Movies like this are really just another avenue of communication.

A a light skinned (or white- whatever) person in the U.S., I say let yourself see it- take a hard look. Allow yourself to feel shame for the actions and attitudes of those who came before us (for some of us, our own actions), realize that it is not now, or was it ever right and then learn to live life in a better way. It's that simple.

When she makes general statements that condemn fellow black people, she probably is rewarded by her white friends you quietly smile as if to say, she is telling it like it is. They may even parade her around the office like a puppet saying things that they wouldn't even say. Because she cherishes the Ryan Phillppe / gosling types so much, it would be poetic justice for her to be engaged to one only to have him play devil's advocate against some of her beliefs. I could her him now like a professor of black studies rhetorically asking her, "So you think over 400 years of oppression is not a reason for some blacks of today to feel a little upset about today's conditions ?"

"But I guess that explains it. your a stupid person"

Why don't you shut the *beep* up, dumbass? You used "your" incorrectly in replace of "you're." Don't call anyone stupid unless you want other people to pester you with every single grammatical mistake that you made. I'm white, and racism is a barely a problem. There is like a 5 person group of kids who try to be Nazis, but they're just a bunch of pussies that would get their asses kicked if they opened their mouths. I'm sure I made a grammatical mistake somewhere here, but I don't care. This is an internet message board--anything but formal.

Oh yeah, and thinking that all--at least most--of white people are racist and out to get them is nothing short of hypocrisy. The problem with whites is that they don't think black people can do anything without some help--condescension. I'm not saying we should forgot the horrors of the past, but we shouldn't dwell on them. We have evolved.... Now, depending on region, racism varyies, but no matter what, only a tiny, tiny fraction of whites don't outgrow any delinquent-ish phases they had developed as teenagers.

Then why are there over 800 white hate groups in america? Why are there over 500 different hate websites? That tiny fraction must sure be busy.
