It's funny white people don't mind being portrayed as

Drug dealers, drug addicts, gangsters, prostitutes, serial killers, rapists, or crooked cops, but if you show whites being racist in the 1960's suddenly they're all up in arms about it.

Seriously, there have only been like three movies made recently that follow this theme, and already many white people are saying they're sick of it. I wonder why? Does it bring out some kind of personal guilt?

It can't be just because they think the movies are bad, because hollywood has made tons of bad movies lately. So it must be something else.

Pretty soon the jackie robinson movie will be made and we'll hear the same whinny complaints.

Without institutional power, how can one be racist? You are describing horrible crimes, race crimes. But that is not the same thing as racism. Racism is an institution, you are confusing it with bigotry.

He supports the institutionalized racism in media. That makes him a racist.

Looney definition? Listen, no offense, but that's just an ignorant statement. Try googling "institution of slavery", read The Autobiography of Malcolm X; there is a wealth of information on the subject. I say without a hint of condescension to please educate yourself on the topic. If nothing else, it is quite interesting.

While I need to check out Confessions of an S.O.B. (been on my list for some time) I must say that I LOVED Lies My Teacher Told Me. In fact, recently started to re-read it. Beyond all the brilliant facts in the book (the aborted US invasion of the USSR, anyone?) it is so well written and exciting. Loewen really achieved his goal of making History accessable and interesting as my former students attest.

reply

Confessions is out of print but still available on Amazon and through the author's website which I cannot recall. Anyway, I too loved Loewen's book. It was so real.

I wrote this guy, Loewen and he emailed back! It was regarding his latest piece, Sundown Towns, a hidden aspect of American racism. he asked me about a town called Oilsdale near Bakersfield California. I worked near there used to work. Here's a piece from his website.

From Maine to California, thousands of communities kept out African Americans (or sometimes Chinese Americans, Jewish Americans, etc.) by force, law, or custom. These communities are sometimes called "sundown towns" because some of them posted signs at their city limits reading, typically, *beep* Don't Let The Sun Go Down On You In ___."

Some towns are still all white on purpose. Their chilling stories have been joined more recently by the many elite (and some not so elite) suburbs like Grosse Pointe, MI, or Edina, MN, that have excluded nonwhites by "kinder gentler means." When I began this research, I expected to find about 10 sundown towns in Illinois (my home state) and perhaps 50 across the country. Instead, I have found more than 440 in Illinois and thousands across the United States. This is their story; it is the first book ever written on the topic.
http://www.uvm.edu/~jloewen/sundowntowns.php

An older black man told me of a sign posted in the 60s that said, *beep* is you can read this run, and if you can't, run anyway."

Loewen has guts but I say, it's about time. Check out Overthrow too and Confessions of an economic hit man. Ciao DBDante!

reply

First of all, DBDante, racism is the belief that one race is superior to another. You don't have to be in a position of power to be a racist. You are the one who needs to educate yourself instead of telling others to.

Secondly, you have a lot of nerve mentioning Malcolm X. and the word racism in the same paragraph. With the exception of the last eight months of his life, he is one of the biggest racists of the 20th century. He called all white people devils and for most of his life believed that ALL white people were morally corrupt beginning at birth.

I guess that you meant that someone should read his autobiography because he is a perfect example of what a racist is. LOL.

First off, Malcolm was spreading the teachings of elijah muhommad when he called all white people devils, after he left the NOI he started spreading his own beliefs.

Second, is it a big mystery why he would be racist against whites? He had experienced mistreatment and tragedy at the hands of whites most of his young life. His father was murdered by the kkk, state workers split up his family, he was given 10 years in prison for a crime that most people only get 2 years. This was happening when all over the country white people had been trying to stop blacks from gaining civil rights. His racist attitude against whites was a reaction the racism he had received from whites.

reply

His racist attitude against whites was a reaction the racism he had received from whites.

Is that simply an explanation for his racist attitudes or, rather, an excuse ?

First off, Malcolm was spreading the teachings of elijah muhommad when he called all white people devils, after he left the NOI he started spreading his own beliefs.

You say that all he was doing was merely spreading the teachings of 'elijah m' when he called whites devils, but how do you know that Malcolm X himself didn't consider those beliefs to be true ? Malcolm X was a smart man, I doubt he was the kind of person who could be brainwashed into spreading beliefs that he himself did not consider to be true, but maybe 'elijah m' was very persuasive. I do however laud him for changing his views on whites towards the end of his life.

You WILL respect my AUTHORITAAAAH !!!!

reply

"Is that simply an explanation for his racist attitudes or, rather, an excuse ?"

Wow Kunle, it's weird how much you criticize me on the american history X board, and then you come and stalk me on another board.

To answer you question it's an explanation, not an excuse. Now what is white people's excuse for committing all of that initial racism against blacks after slavery ended?

"You say that all he was doing was merely spreading the teachings of 'elijah m' when he called whites devils, but how do you know that Malcolm X himself didn't consider those beliefs to be true ?"

Because Malcolm X said so. In his speeches he would always be saying the "honorable elijah muhammad" says this, and teaches that. He said in an interview after he left the NOI that he would no longer spread muhammad's teachings, he would spread his own. And then he appologized to people he had offended like MLK jr.

"Malcolm X was a smart man, I doubt he was the kind of person who could be brainwashed into spreading beliefs that he himself did not consider to be true,"

Yes Malcolm was a smart man, but that didn't keep him from becoming a drug dealer, a drug addict, and a theif. It also didn't keep him from being brainwashed by elijah muhammad's propaganda, as he was a smart man himself.

xderknielsenx:
Long Beach: It was a black man and a couple of black ladies that intervened, shielded the girls, admonished the group and took the girls to the hospital. It's a predominantly white area, very eclectic, wealthy and crowded, like Georgetown in DC. Not one white person, male or female lifted a finger to help those girls. If it had been the other way around blacks would have helped another black. That's at least how it used to be, back in the day.

Reginald Denny: It was a hot day in LA and everybody awaited a verdict on the Rodney King case. For one year blacks and some whites had picketed the LA courthouse, asking for justice. The venue was changed to simivalley, a predominantly white part of southern cal, north of LA, full of police officer residences. For one year everyone waited. One incident after the other of cops beating or killing blacks had ended up with no accountability. LAPD was under fire. Then it happened. I remember that day so well. The announcement hit the radio stations, the airways and the telephone circuit. NOT GUILTY. KING deserved everything he got. Again, black men came to his aid, despite the danger to themselves and their families.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reginald_Oliver_Denny

On April 29, 1992, at 5:39 PM, Denny loaded his red, eighteen-wheel truck with twenty-seven tons of sand and began driving to a plant in Inglewood where the sand was due. He left the Santa Monica Freeway and took a familiar shortcut across Florence Avenue to get to his destination. His truck had no radio, so he was unaware he was driving into a riot zone. At 6:46 PM, after entering the intersection at Normandie, rioters threw rocks at his windows and he heard people shouting at him to stop. Overhead, a news helicopter piloted by reporter Bob Tur captured the events that followed.

A man named Antoine Miller opened the truck door, giving others the chance to pull Denny out. Another man, Henry Keith Watson, then held Denny's head down with his foot. Denny, who had done nothing to provoke the violence, was kicked in the stomach. A man who had led a liquor store break-in earlier that day hurled a five-pound piece of medical equipment at Denny's head and hit him three times with a claw hammer. A man named Damian Monroe Williams then threw a slab of concrete at Denny's head and knocked him unconscious. Williams then did a victory dance over Denny. He then flashed a gang sign at news helicopters, which were televising the events live, above and pointed at Denny. A man named Anthony Brown then spat on Denny and left with Williams. Several by-standers took pictures of Denny but did not attempt to help him.

After the beating had ended, various men threw beer bottles at the unconscious Denny. Gary Williams, a drug addict who frequented the area, approached Denny and rifled through his pockets. Lance Parker, a process server for a law firm, stopped near the body and attempted to shoot the gas tank of Denny's truck but missed.

Bobby Green, Titus Murphy, Terri Barnett and Lei Yuille, who had been watching the events on TV, came to Denny's aid. Bobby Green was a trucker with a license that allowed him to drive Denny's truck. They loaded Denny into the truck and Green drove him to the hospital. Upon arrival at the hospital, Denny suffered a seizure.

Paramedics who attended to Denny said he came very close to death. His skull was fractured in ninety-one places and pushed into the brain. His left eye was so badly dislocated that it would have fallen into his sinus cavity had the surgeons not replaced the crushed bone with a piece of plastic. A permanent crater remains in his head despite efforts to correct it.

The next thing I knew, the city blew up. Mobs of looters and angry citizens hit the street and everything fell apart, it was apocalyptic.Denny was innocently driving through a black area, unaware of the rioters, and was pulled out of his car and pummeled to within an inch of his life. It was frightening and sickening to watch. Mexicans came out too, in droves. People starting painting "black owned business" on their store fronts. Especially the Koreans who had invaded the black community by storm They were enemies due to their condescension and killing of a 15 year old black girl.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latasha_Harlins
Latasha Harlins (1976-1991) was a 15-year old African American girl shot and killed on March 16, 1991, by Soon Ja Du, a Korean American grocery store owner. The South Los Angeles store, Empire Liquor, was normally staffed by Du's husband and son. However, on the morning of the shooting, Du was working behind the counter because her son had received death threats from local gang members whom he was testifying against in court and her husband was out resting in the family's van. Harlins' death came just 13 days after the videotaped beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles Police Department officers.

In a video captured by the security camera in the store, Latasha Harlins was seen putting a $1.79 bottle of orange juice into her backpack. Du observed this action by Harlins, but did not notice that Harlins had then approached the store's counter with money in her hand.[1] Empire Liquor had frequent problems with shoplifting and burglary, as did most grocery markets in the area. Du confronted Harlins by grabbing Harlins' sweater. Harlins responded by punching Du two times, the second blow knocking Du to the ground. Du then threw a stool and immediately reached under the counter to retrieve a gun. As Harlins turned around and began to leave the store, Du fired and shot Harlins in the back of the head and immediately fainted.[2][3]

Du's husband, Billy Heung Ki Du, heard the shot and rushed into the store to dial 9-1-1. However, it was too late; Harlins was dead.

Du would be convicted of voluntary manslaughter and given a sentence of 5 years' probation, 400 hours of community service, and a $500 fine by Judge Joyce Karlin after the jury in her trial had recommended a 16-year jail sentence.

The incident and sentencing by the court exacerbated already existing tensions between African American residents and Korean American merchants in South Central Los Angeles. Those tensions would prove to be one of the catalysts of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, and indeed the Harlins incident specifically would result in a wave of crimes committed by African Americans against Korean Americans prior to and during those riots. During the course of the riots, Empire Liquor Market was burnt to the ground, along with many other Korean American-owned businesses.

People were pissed off about racism in this country and then the verdict tipped them over. LA has over 20 million people, and a small proportion rioted. Everyone felt bad about Denny's undeserved beating.

LAPD was no where around in LA. I drove 50 miles, from one neighborhood to another and watched as people went under broken down gates to pull liquor and other goods out of stores while cops sounded bleeps of their sirens, staying back and letting it happen. I cannot say I blamed them. Rioters were white in white areas, black and Hispanic. Many were later identified by security cameras and hauled off to jail and prison. Many white business owners torched their own stores to collect insurance for failing businesses. Black gangs torched liquor stores owned by Koreans, protesting the number placed in black neighborhoods where churces used to stand. It was a weird time for LA. LA took a long time to recover. Police abandonment was intentional too. Cost the chief his job.

Thats a horrid story of bigotry and ignorance. I must confess I do not know the finer details of the story, so I'm not sure what circumstances surround the assailants being given only probation. It is a shameful thing the assailants did.

While not to take away from the story of the good, pure white girls, let me offer a few similar stories:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-11-22-elderly-shootout_x.htm

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2006/11/28/nyc_to_probe_slaying_by_police/

Perhaps you can see the difference between being assaulted by ignorant, bigoted fools and by the Police Department. That difference is institutionalized racism.

"I hope to see this happen once - I won't hesitate to use deadly force. "

As opposed to just force? Could that be the racist in you?

reply

All of the kids were convicted and are serving time, even some who were not involved.

The bridegroom that was killed is another example of what the white man's psyche contains. Remember the first police force in the country was designed to capture runaway slaves. They see something bizarre when they see a black person. They emotionally perceive a threat.

that is a tragic story of the w92 year old woman. i don't believe she shot the cops until they entered her house. trigger happy cops will get away with it too.

another example of institutionalized racism: Imus gets a 2 week lay-off.

Here's a great example of cover up. The story of Kevin Garnett on most sites, this from Wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Garnett
Garnett was born in Mauldin, South Carolina to Shirley Garnett and O’Lewis McCullough.[3] , Garnett played for Mauldin High School in Mauldin, South Carolina. For his senior year he transferred to Farragut Career Academy in Chicago, Illinois.
Beyond the Glory reported the following: In his senior year, Garnett found that those racists from SC were determined to stop him from going to the NBA. They accused him of lynching and arrested him. He was one of many students watching a fight in the last week of school. The NBA black coach, who trained him every year in camp, intervened and moved him and his mother and siblings to Chicago. Mom later returned to Cacalacky to take care of her sick husband and Garnett and his sister struggle. The coaches helped out. He was drafted. There was much more to it but he left because of a concerted effort by the school and city and cops to stop him. He was a first, like so many other blacks. If you get a chance check out beyond the glory.

quixo lied about probation.

"BTW, the most they got was PROBATION."

That's more than what the cops who beat rodney king got, or the cops who murdered amadu diallo.

"This story alone has woken up a lot of White people. I hope to see this happen once - I won't hesitate to use deadly force."

Woke them up to what, this wasn't the first time a group of black teens beat up a group of white teens. It's called a fight.

And if you use deadly force in this type of situation, you'd be the one to go to jail.

reply

The cops in both cases were suspended. With PAY. But please, lets not be self-pitying; its obvious that these sponsored police beatings are just coincidentally against the Black community, its hardly indicative of a national policy, right? Just coincidence...

Whites' constant hatred towards films like "Pride" have plenty to do with white guilt; which pretty much explains the extremely low ratings they give African American films on this site.

To hear them tell it, there's some secret organization of black screenwriters out there inventing white oppressor films; never mind the fact the majority of these films are based on actual events involving white racism.

Pretending their hands are blood-free only adds to the delusion.

Guarantee the white one will be the guilty one.
I'm not exaggerating, its to the point where it ruins the show, not so much because of the racial element, but it ruins the suspense of guessing.
