A perfect example of everything I hate about stereotypical French cinema
I’ve got one word for this… pretentious.
I quite enjoyed the first 10 minutes, until I realized that it was not supposed to be a parody of a typical French drama, but the real thing.
This is one of those movies that are so totally predictable from the very beginning.
I’ve got no problem with black and white; some of my favorite movies are shot that way. I’ve got no problem with subtitles and prefer them to a bad sync. I have to admit I’m not a big fan of dramas, but when done properly I can enjoy them as well. So my criticism isn’t _just_ based on prejudice.
But this waste-of-time was really, really horrible. The meaningful stares between people, the monotones soundtrack, the desperate In-Your-Face attempts to give this movie an artistic look, the storylines going nowhere and of course, the predictable disaster everything turns into.
There just wasn’t any chance to connect emotionally with any of the characters.
In your typical French drama, things start gloomy, then something goes wrong, someone will think things are going to become better, then everything actually get worse and in the end everyone is dead or lost in a state of complete desperate misery.
Now don’t get me wrong – the Hollywood method of going from status quo to an obstacle and from there to the happy end – is just as repetitions and (in the long run) pointless. But hey – at least it’s entertaining!
Final verdict for 13: Boring and tedious from start to finish! Avoid!
