Don't Believe The Positive Reviews

I watched this movie after reading all the great reviews on this site. People were even comparing it to 28 Days Later, a great, well made movie. That comparison is a complete joke and extremely misleading. In reality, this is just boring and at times painful to watch. I understand that it had a very low budget, but the glowing reviews people gave it on here are almost funny if you've actually seen the movie (almost because you wasted 90 minutes watching it haha). It takes about half the movie to develop the extremely flat characters, who are killed off randomly with no emotional reaction from those close to them. I guess I should have known what to expect when I saw that it had rat people...

man i agree fully! i don't understand how people think this is good! i wish i never wasted 90 minutes of my life either, the bad lighting and shaking camera made it really painful for me to sit through

It's funny how opinions are, well, opinions, and tend to DIFFER, because I really enjoyed the film. Of course it was by no means "perfect", as like the OP said, it was made on a shoestring budget (even the actors all worked for free!), but despite this obvious setback, the movie is surprisingly well-made.

It's a slow burn, which allows for some excellent character development, you really get to know, and care for, the various people living in this apartment building, which creates all the more tension when sh*t starts to go down! I actually had to double check that I was in fact watching the right movie at first because the beginning makes it seem like you are about to watch a hard-hitting drama feature involving the lives of the people in this apartment building, but once the "horror" stuff gets going (I don't want to give anything away), it REALLY gets going, and it's all the more horrific to watch because of the connection you're made to feel with these characters, and that's pretty rare nowadays!

It's refreshing to know that there are still some horror writers/directors out there who actually care about the genre and its current state, enough to put everything they have into getting their movie made, and I don't just mean money (cuz they didn't have any), I'm talking blood, sweat, and tears people! They made the best movie possible with the little money they had, everyone worked for free (which is awesome and just goes to show how much people really cared about, and believed in, this movie), the special effects are great (considering), the editing is great, the acting is great, the settings are great, the story (although slightly over-done, and despite of this) is believable and exciting to watch, (especially because of the characters), a really great effort all around by all those involved!

Going into this movie I really had no idea what to expect, other than the fact that it was part of the After Dark Horrorfest and wasn't exactly "high budget" territory, and I must say that I was not left disappointed. Now that I know about all the love that went into getting this movie made, I'm even more impressed! Good job everyone!!! Thanks for showing us that a no-budget horror movie can still be scary and fun to watch!!!

Kudos!!!

This movie is straight terrible, and it would be nice if people like you would stop defending it. I assume you were in the movie or worked on it because the thought that anyone could be idiotic enough to call this a good movie is ridiculous. The fake reviews won't make your movie popular. They will just make more people watch it, think it's terrible, and proceed to write bad reviews and make fun of it. To anyone still considering watching this: IT HAS RAT PEOPLE! Go with your gut, and avoid this piece of sh*t.

reply

So people aren't allowed to have a different opinion than you?

reply

Well not everyone has the same opinion, it's just ignorant to think everyone should agree with you, then resort to insults when they don't. While I certainly wouldn't give this film a "glowing review" I also wouldn't call it *beep* either. I have seen way way worse B horror movies. You want a film that is a steaming pile of crap, try and sit through 20 minutes of "Zombie Nation". This movie was intended to be one of those "so cheesy it's funny" films, and I think they hit the bulls eye. I went into this looking for a good old cheap, cheesy horror film to laugh at, and got exactly what I was looking for.

reply

Pay attention, boys and girls.

"Miss Lola" is a paid plant. Typical of what goes on across imdb boards for mostly crap low-budget movies.

A real scandal. Somebody really should clean up this dump.

reply

I'm not a paid plant.
I work at a video store and study film history in school.
This and Nick Damici's other film, Stake Land, are both masterful genre films that break the norms of what we expect in these types of films.

Mulberry St. is incredibly well written, maybe not in it's dialogue which is natural but with what the film is getting across. Every zombie film is an allusion for alienation and other issues in society.

Obviously here the film is about the changing landscape in New York post 9/11. Condos are popping up all over Manhattan including one that's meant to replace a flop on Mulberry. The tenants here are being treating like vermin, they are being thrown from their homes.
By the end of the film all the tenants see their ends one way or the other, the plague of low income lives have been quelled by the rats of this world.

I don't know anyone who worked in this film, all i know is that it's really quite good. And deeply affecting.

Maybe you don't watch films and look for meanings, maybe the low budget effects and lack of a happy ending wasn't tailored for you. But some of us prefer substance over style. Don't assume everyone must hate this film.

[I'm not a paid plant.]

OK, then. You're a potted plant.

reply

Thanks for pointing out that the same writer created Stake Land, which, I thought was an excellent movie. Some folks probably thought it was slow, too, but I have the ability to enjoy a creative story without going brain dead if there aren't nonstop action scenes. I'll give Mulberry St a go.

The pacing of this movie is horrible....like someone said...20 min into the movie and nothing happens...the acting was okay

and i agree "Miss Lola" is a paid plant.

reply

You're really dumb if you believe that. I enjoyed the movie.

If I can't smoke and swear I'm *beep*

reply

I do agree that Miss Lola is likely a plant...but I do not agree with the majority of you here who say it sucks...as if that's the end of the story. I say let people decide for themselves. Rottentomatoes only has 11 reviews, so that's not really anything to go on, but 8 of them are positive and are from ESplatter, LA Weekly, The Deadbolt (whatever that is), Monsters and Critics and others, the negative reviews are from Eye For Film, IGN Movies and some guy.

Fangoria gave it 3.5 out of 4 stars and largely praised the cast as the reason for the favorable review...as well as their use of FX given such a nonexistent budget. You can read it here: http://www.fangoria.com/index.php/reviews/movies/4220-fresh-from-the-archives-mulberry-street

These people also give a favorable review: http://www.horror-movies.ca/mulberry-street-review

Another favorable review: http://twitchfilm.com/2007/10/tad-mulberry-street-review.html

I understand that all of these are indie organizations, but given the film is unknown (I found it on a related search after watching the trailer for VHS2 on YT), I doubt it was even noticed by any big name reviewers. Hell, most of the horror flicks I know and love come from the dark corners of indie outfits.

I hope nobody thinks that I am a plant of any kind. LOL. I work with children in a psychiatric hospital. :)

I have to admit I laughed at Crane's review and wondered whether he was involved in the movie's production. I saw it on SciFy and was disappointed. Fortunately I had recorded the movie when it was showing so got to watch it later -- thus able to fast forward thru boring, uninteresting scenes. The movie was not one of the best around, but neither was it a piece of crap. Like one of you posted, people have different opinions. For being a low-budget piece (did the actors really work for free?), it was all right. The script was not the best, but the actors did handle their parts well. Maybe it would have been better if they had a bigger budget and could have invested in some CGI or better FX. It's not a movie I would spend money on but to watch on TV when nothing better is on, it's okay.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I like the characters and got really into them. I wasn't expecting much, but it was fun.

It's no masterpiece, but it wasn't terrible. I admit, I didn't watch the whole thing. I have a low tolerance for boring parts, so I just fast foward until I see things dying. I also was in a bit of a hurry. I was watching it on my lunch break, so I only had about forty minutes for a hundred and twenty seven minute movie.

I may watch it again and give it more time.

And THAT is where babies come from.

reply

Not the greatest movie ever made but still well worth watching. At times very scary, the story didn't pander to the usual hollywood stereo types and happy endings.

Very good film
