Didn't Get Ending

Ok sorry. I was typing up a paper while watching this movie so I didn't actually soak up half of what was going on, though it was pretty self explanitory.

Anyway, ok so Danes and Gere figure out the peds are in cahoots (spelled right?) with each other. But why was the lady (Kaydee's character) all sad in the end when Danes tells Gere not to shoot? She wants him to shoot her in that psycho kind of way but then she is all like "there are more bodies here, I'll show you."

And what was the relationship between Kaydee and Gere? Why was she all saying "we should have been together" or something along those lines? Did they know each other before Kaydee and her old boyfriends sexual abuse stuff? Was Gere a sort of pedaphile too, I mean not an actual pedaphile, but had weird thoughts or a weird past?

Sorry, again I apologize for being clueless. I just didn't have time to re-watch it with full attention.

reply

My interpretation of why Kadee's character was sad is because she recognized that Gere's character was capable of committing violence (he was emotionally abusive and sadistic during past visits at the hair salon where she works as the earlier scenes have implied) and knew that the events would push him over the edge. When it didn't go as planned, she was disappointed at her masterplan falling apart.

reply

She just saw Gere's character as a kindred soul -- someone who recognized the darkness within her. And the darkness within himself. I think this is a very underrated film. It's a shame it didn't go theatrical.

reply

Bronzescag, I don't think he was a kindred soul..but I can see where you'd say Viola thought Babbage was. I give the OP a longer answer of why. And yes ITA he's dark and complex.

I think the film could have been done a little better, it lost my attention a few times, but it wasn't a 'bad' movie like some would have you believe. I think they completely under utilized Bobby Stiles (Ray Wise), Haymes Ownby (French Stewart) & Beatrice Bell (Avril Lavine).

Though I like Andrew Lau as a director..the back of the DVD box says "High Octane Thriller"... this just wasn't that for me. It felt like a long drawn out kind of "Who Sent Babbage A Circled News Paper?" sort of thing.

It's like something was missing from the script..I'm not sure what..but it was probably Chow Yun Fat..I find putting him in a movie can usually make it suddenly more intrigueing..but that's just me.

reply

Prosser, I give a longer explaination to the OP-but yes I agree he was emotionally abusive & sadistic during past visits..sort of..only because he hounded her from job to job and didn't let up. And pretty much reminded her she was the scum of the earth and didn't fall for her "Poor L'il Me" crapola.

Kstreckfus, The reason why Viola Faye (Kaydee Strickland) is upset-sad at the end of the film is because ultimately her sexual depravity fetish is she's an EXTREME Masochist.

When her husband was 'captured' and put behind bars, but she was held as an accomplice but let go-with the stipulation that she had to be on the Sexual Predators List she didn't have anyone to play act her perverted sex games with anymore.

Until Errol Babbage (Richard Gere) took it upon himself to personally and vehemently HOUND her, even from job to job, which seemed to satisfy her needs to be humilated and dominated by a strong Alpha Male. (Mostly-but she still didn't have the sexual outlet..hence the use of Beatrice Bell (Avril Lavigne) who liked to be beaten by her boyfriend what's his name that Viola shot at the end of the movie.)

So everythings okay, until Viola finds out Babbage's being replaced by Allison Lowry (Claire Danes)who falls for Viola's "I'm The Innocent Victim Of What My Husband Did & Now I'm Doomed To Forever Be Hounded Relentlessly By Babbage, Woe Is Me!" baloney hook, line and sinker.

So...thinking she's doing the right thing. Lowry basically says, "That was the old regime. Things are going to be different now that I'm in charg, no more hounding pathetic vitcims trying to piece thier lives back together-because oh a leapord can change it's spots..blah blah liberal tripe."

(Btw, I'm actually a Liberal..I can poke fun at utopian naivety..lol.)

Which sends Viola into an IMMEDIATE state of shock-withdrawl, and like a junkie that needs her fix..the ony way to get Babbage's attention back is to steal another brat-to draw out that retirement-because he couldn't possibly leave his favorite game..

In her mind..Viola's like his lover, and it's just another depraived sexual fetish game. That she doesn't ever want to end. She wants him to loathe her as long as possible, because as long as he does..like right up to the end-when he has her on the farm and she dangled one skeleton for him Ohh goodie he abused her verbally! Threatened her life with the pistol..was he going to kill her? Probably, she was pushing him closer to the edge. She even played a little game of bait-Suggesting she tell the parents what she did to the little girl..oh the audacity of that suggestion nearly ended her life and the thrill was tantalizing..nearly climax inducing for her.

Until Lowry, the voice of humanity and reason showed up. The one that was able to help Babbage keep his savage primal rage in check. That bicth Lowry made him remember he was just a human being, not a judge, jury and executioner. And he certainly wasn't going to simply end Viola's life..Hell no! Not when she could go thru the rest of her life in a boring ass life sentence for multiple premeditated homocides.

Which is why Viola was snivleing at the end on her hands and knees, literally begging and pleading to win her "Lover" back- With morsels that had worked before "More skeletons", "More Tawdry Gruesome News"...anything..but Babbage was done.

It was like he realized at THAT moment HE was the one that was giving a Masocistic sexual predator it's Fix with his Sadistic Meathods.

And he wasn't even really a Sadist at all- He was definately jaded and cynical-and because he'd been on the job too long he felt he had to do something for the victims and he'd become a bit of a vigilante by clobbering the Predators whenever possible. But he wasn't deriving a sexual gratification from it. It was more like he felt he was dealing out justice for the victims, survivors and loved ones with no voices that the justice system failed.

<BIG EXHALE> I want a cookie now..because that was a really long explaination..

N147718, I'm not sure if 'Cracky Opinions' is in the DSM-IV under 'Abnormal Film Psychoanalysis' heh. But meh, what would we..I mean I know? j/k.

I figure if someone's on IMDb, they're at least an armchair film fan, so everyone's got at least a 50/50 chance of coming up with a plausible sounding reason for why something happened for whatever reason however it did in any said movie.

It's more a game of chance, and I was the Punk that apperantly got lucky that day. LOL. If you do, and you saw the same films you'll have to let me know what you thought too.

Guys, do NOT judge me. Just DON'T! There's a bloody writers' strike affecting a lot of my favourite shows, I hate Reality tv, and I'm watching all sorts of crap, thinking that it can't be THAT bad. Oh yes, it can.

Thanks for your insight. I was wondering about the history between Viola and Babbage, when she said "you should let me do something about that grey" and Errol Babbage replied sharply "you're never touching me." There was a weird intimacy that was more than snappy dialogue, and she flinched at his reply. I was like, "why is a murdering freak flinching at words from a citizen?"

But your explanation made it quite clear. Small observation, perhaps Viola was so distraught at the end because Babbage could control his impulses while she could not; she was disappointed that he was better than her. Anyway, thanks again, cheers! \m/ \m/

Great job! NOW I get the film...

sorry, but NO.
The ending of the film makes it pretty clear what was going on.
"If u stare into an abyss long enough it might stare back" is one of the final lines.
It's rather simple. She wants him to shoot her, because that would justify her view of life: "Humans are reckless animals".
Also killing her would backfire at him, she'd get revenge in a way. She'd appear like a victim herself.

Well the point is: If the guy who hates people like her so much, has no control over his own flaws, how can he blame her? That's the logic behind this. You see this often, everybody tends to justify his failures by looking at other peoples misdeeds. It's a pretty natural reaction and usually not a conscious one.

Actually i believe justification is what most of the movie is about.
Is Gere he rightfully enraged? Or is he just acting out his own perversions using his job as an excuse? I mean that question pretty much gets shoved in your face the whole time. And you don't get an answer to it. (which i think is a good thing)

It builds up the protagonists rage in the viewer and sets you in a "what would you have done"-position.
The movie doesn't pass judgment on Gere in the end.

but masochism and alpha males... that's your speculation and NOT in the movie. Please don't talk about psychology if you don't really know much about it.

reply

I appreciated KitsunegariBlu's creative and insightful interpretation, but I think your more simple explanation nails it.

reply

I think when Claire Danes convinced Gere to not shoot Kandee. Kandee's importance was devalued & she wanted all the attention back to here. Hence her willingness to help find more bodies.
She thrived on the attention & Claire took her oxygen so to speak.
