what time period is it meant to be set in?

it really confused me, because they had credit cards and modern accessories, but the cars are old fashioned and lemon uses a typewriter.
i then came to the conclusion that by having this juxtaposition of different time periods exaggerates the differences between Penelope's homelife and the world outside of it.
did anyone else notice this or was it just me?

i dont think there is a specific time period

the movie is kinda like modern fairy tale and filmed in the same manner as the tv show pushing daisies or amelie, just without a narrator

it seemed to me that they were going with no specific time period...sort of like edward scissorhands or lemony snickets a series of unfortunate events

old fashion things being used in modern times gives it a more whimsical feeling

Plus, by mixing time periods it's showing it's not meant to be in "our world". It's a world with it's own time periods. And I love it. Like zoliloz said, very whimsical. And I love Pushing Daisies. Too bad the idiot execs canceled it. :(

I think it's supposed to be kind of timeless, like it could have taken place years ago or it could take place tomorrow. I think it makes the movie more classic.

It has a very similar look & feel that Pushing Daisies had. Does anyone know if the same people were involved, like the set designer, costume, the effects with the big tree?

If you look close at the file on Johnny near the end you can see that it says he was born in'70 and is twenty years old. So if this was set in our world it would make it 1990.

I agree, it is timeless. I also tried to figure out where the location was supposed to be with some of the cast speaking with British accents, and others not. But again, I don't think it was material to the plot.

thanks for answering.

Yes, I noticed that too, for a movie made in 2006, it had many anachronistic moments, it felt like it was more supposed to be around the late 80s period. Everything from the fact that such a rich family has no cell phone, nor anyone else in the movie, for that matter, even the business had regular, non cordless phones, and the bulky camera in the jacket, (even the late 90s had better cameras and surveillance devices) and, as you pointed out, the typewriter, all seems very out of date for such a contemporary movie. I see many on this form say it's supposed to be timeless, or maybe even closer to an alternate reality, but honestly, things like that are only more jarring, and throw my suspension of disbelief off all the more. If you are going to have a story that includes magic, and fairy tale like qualities, it's that much more important to ground the rest of the story in a believable place and time. It calls unnecessary attention to itself when so much of the modern world is ignored for that purpose. However, if the story IS actually supposed to be set in the early 80s, well, maybe it then makes more sense, however, I still feel this should be established so as not to confuse people, which they never really did.
