Why, oh why, is Casey Affleck in this?!?

I watched Gone Baby Gone and I can honestly say I have never seen a movie where a single actor can completely ruin a movie; the plot was interesting, Freeman and Harris were great and the ONLY thing that made me hate that movie was Casey Affleck. Dunno bout you guys, but I just don't think he can act, so never mind why he's in this movie, why does he even have a career?! Big brother pulling strings much..?

reply

I disagree, I like him...but to each, their own.

reply

That's funny to me since I was actually wondering the same question, but for a different reason. This movie seems beneath him to me. He could do way better than this.

Everyone is entitled to a payday once in a while. It's why Hilary Swank made The Core and Denzel Washington made that godawful train movie. As long as you don't make a habit of it I don't have a problem.

reply

The two movies you gave examples of (The Core and Unstoppable) both did well enough in theaters and with home video world wide. If you wanted to give examples of actors selling out for bad movies, then why not mention "Ishtar" (Beatty and Hoffman) rather than Unstoppable - which was a good movie (but apparently you don't like trains or something).

reply

Your analogy is a bit flawed though. The poster isnt talking in terms of box office sucess, especially since we dont know how well this will do yet.

And The Core (which I thought was OK) and Unstoppable (which was very good IMO) were not exactly high brow movies, which I think the poster was really talking about.

That said, I disagree, people like to do different roles for different reasons. Sometimes its about money. Other times its working with certain people you admire involved in the project. And its because the role is different.

In this case, yeah Affleck has done this kind of stuff before in the Oceans movie! And I mean the guy was in the American Pie movies lol. He tries to make more serious movies, but lets not pretend he's Daniel Day Lewis or anything.

reply

Yeah, in the case of Denzel and Unstoppable, Unstoppable was directed by Tony Scott, someone that Denzel has worked with multiple times. I'm sure their friendship/work history came into play when he decided to do that movie.

reply

I think he meant "The Taking of Pelham 123". Unstoppable got rather high ratings and an academy award nomination. Pelham was relatively panned and a lot of harsh criticism.

If I had to wager, between "lousy remake" and "Academy award nominee" for which one was the "godawful train movie" Denzel was in, it's a clear choice.

reply

You mean Pelham 123 or Unstoppable?

I really liked both movies - they were both directed by Tony Scott and Denzel Washington made many movies directed by Tony, and has great respect for the director

So... where did you pull this one out of? Your a##? :)

Nobody would turn down being in a movie with Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller. Plus the movie isn't even out yet so you don't know how it'll do in the box office.

reply

Same here, I think he was the only actor who did a good job in this movie.

reply

If you think Casey Affleck can't act then you obviously haven't seen The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. He is a phenomenal actor--and this generic, action comedy is very beneath his talent.

Television is a vice; film is an addiction.

One film doesn't make an actor. I have to agree with the OP in this particular film he's not that good. You can put that down to acting, playing an uninteresting character or the director.

reply

I actually came in here expecting you to say this is beneath him. Is this a joke? For you taste in movies, I recommend you watch some Uwe Boll movies...

reply

Not surprising why he cashed in with this. He was great in Jesse James, then squandered his rising star by getting involved in that Joaquin Phoenix mess. He's back to square one...

I also thought your post was going to be the opposite of what it was. Casey Affleck is a good actor and he would be one of the reasons I would consider watching this movie.

reply

Hmm, seems I'm in the minority haha. I suppose it's only fair I give him another shot; I'll admit and say I won't go and look for him in the video store but I won't avoid him like the plague haha

reply

Michael Caine has a famous quote about filming bad movies for the money & filming good movie for the awards. Thats why Casey did the movie.

reply

I agree. Casey was really likable in the movie.

He did very well in the Assassination of Jesse James...

I think he can. You just have to get used to his...erm...quirkiness?
