LMAO... why don't y'all just chill da fawk out? What a funny slew of responses. Cracked me up, seriously.

Plenty of people react negatively to black guys with non-black women (esp. white). But somehow - for some random reason, white people seem to have less negative reactions if it's some washed out (read: "MULLATO!") black guy with light skin, green eyes, and 'cute curly-fries' spring-y hair with out the kinkiness. It's crap - it's residual racism that's left over from the days when people actually believed 'whiteness' was a more valuable trait. The days when the half-white 'house negros' got the extra leftovers after the mastah and his family had their dinner - while the dark-as-midnight 'field-negroes' starved for the night in their huts. Same thing for Asians - white people luuuuuuve Keanu Reeves (a half-Asian that looks like a white dude), but make it a NATIONAL SPORT of pissin' on full-blooded Asian males. Yet some more nonsense.

But it's really not that white people are card-carrying KKK members. Most white folks I know are pretty decent people, but some aren't aware of the subtle prejudices they carry - and the original poster just had a mental hiccup. And if these things happen, it's upto minorities to let know them know about these things in a non-threatening way - aka OPEN COMMUNICATION, PEOPLE! There's no need to flame people to a crisp - in most cases they don't mean any harm.

And you know, the bottom line is that we all have our subtle prejudices that are the sums of our upbringing and background. There is not ONE SINGLE PERSON in this country that doesn't carry at LEAST a smidgen of sub-conscious bias. I've met some pretty damn racist black people - and THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE THE POSTER CHILDREN FOR ANTI-RACISM! But the truth is that they are no different from a white person or a yellow person or a brown person. It's human nature for us to imperfect. It's unrealistic to expect people to be 'squeaky clean' in that sense - but the noble thing would be to recognize and ADMIT that these prejudices exist. Thats' the first step - we're all stuck with each other whether we effin' like it or not, and the sooner we decide to just drop our petty racial BS, the sooner we can kick back and have a great time. Heheh...

The dude above me is right, bottom line if it comes down to it, I'll do any good looking asian, white, black or spanish girl my age or of age(I am only 21 by the way). Don't matter to me what their skin color is. By no means am I trying to sound like a pig though, I believe most guys my age would agree with me.

Edison who? Nicholas who? Just kidding. But those guys look like GIRLS. Like androgynous femme-boys. No way, Jose! I'm GLAD those guys weren't cast in this movie.

reply

I have to agree they don't look good together. I don't think Hayden really look good with anyone, she practically look like a little kid. Her height just makes her look like a little girl. She could be 14, but if she were 5'9", it wouldn't be a problem.

Maybe I have a bias against short people, but she is pretty substantially shorter than the US average height for women. The average is 5'5", she's only 5'1". I remember her in Raising Helen, when she stands next to a guy who's 6'4", she looks like a little girl.

I suppose they could pull it off with good camera angles though. I think part of what made Lost in Translation work is that Johansson doesn't look that short amongst Japanese people. I guess they're just going to have to cast a lot of short people. If you put Hayden next to Yao Ming or something it'll just be like the Apple commercial.

reply

Ken is not Yao Ming. In fact he's short, probably below the average height for a Chinese/Korean/other Asian (probably not Japanese though :P).

Ken - 168cm
Hayden - 155cm

reply

Ughh.. Average American female is a little under 5'4" tall and 165 lbs. Average American male is a little under 5'10" and 190 lbs.

Average guys in Japan I believe is 5'8" or 5'9". People in Asia are getting taller and taller due to better diet.

American media like to make everyone seem so short but reality is it is a negative stereotype like so many others we have in this culture.

There are a lot of guys over 7 feet tall in China. People are getting taller everywhere while American heights have pretty much stayed the same. Americans used to be taller due to better diet, steroid infested beef and milk.

Just a little fact before people go around spread more false info and create more stereotypes.

@jake14853

All that essay of yours and you have so little clue about what racist really means... believe me, your ignorance can be considered bliss after reading the fantasies of some really sick people, truly racist people, that basically dream of exterminating certain races [and no, I'm not talking about the Holohoax]! Now THAT's racism, not the sissy-American, child's play reminiscence of Afro-American slavery, where what they really did was protect white women from genocidal mixing with Third World DNA!

And yes, whiteness is a valuable trait. Without whiteness, the US - in fact, hell, both the Americas and even Australia - would still be Third World sheetholes!

P.S.: I have nothing against AMWF. East Asians are smart - and also not ugly!

No matter what some people say how wrong White Girl and Asian Guy. It racism by some of you poster. In the real world, there is more White Girl/Asian Guy relationship and marriages. In Europe and Asia, it more common than the US.

You cannot accept White Girl with Asian Guy. It no difference 25+ years ago with White Girl with Black Guy. Even today, people stereotype any attractive white girl with a black guy as the girl slut, marrying for the money, or sex thing.

Asian guy with different stereotypes can't touch a white girl. It play wrong especially there a age difference in this case. Even if it was not an difference, the same people will find some other excuse.

Sad to say, we like to make issue out of everything. Some white and they will not admit it has the White superior complex. It Ok for White Guy on the White Horse rescue the minority and white women from the evil everyone else. It not ok for Asian guy rescuing the White maiden from the evil everyone else especially if evil person white.

You never see a movie with E.g Imagine Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt abusing and raping some poor White women. Some Asian Guy(Jet Li or Chow Yan Fat) saving the white maiden girl. These movies do exist in Europe Asian Male Hero saving European White Girl.

As for Interracial couples, I many Asian Guys with White Girls. The sad thing, some of the white girls seem to age faster than their Asian Husband. A perfect example is my college buddy is 40 and wife is 34, there has been some situations
where people thought older white lady married younger man. My college buddy always say, my young wife. People say, are you sure.

It's a hell of a difference. Blacks are a Third World race, while Asians are not. AMWF is nowhere nearly as bad as the disgusting BMWF or BMAF.

I think that Addie was 16-years-old for a reason. We're supposed to feel shocked about the age difference in the beginning of the movie and even Liam suffers from guilt over it on numerous occasions. Liam is reluctant to so much as kiss Addie and chooses not to become intimately involved with her because, as he reminds her, she is "still just a young girl."

Liam is a conflicting character and Addie being 16-years-old only brings that conflict outside for us to see in their relationship. Gosh, everything in this guy's life is conflicting! From his family issues to his struggle with acknowledging both his national and ethnic roots. This movie was about Liam trying to find love for himself as much as an identity (and sanity).

However, when Liam leaves for Shanghai, Addie is turning 17-years-old. When she returns from Paris, another year has passed. So, we can safely assume that by the end of the movie, Addie is either 18-years-old, or very close to turning 18. The difference isn't just a number either. Addie went to Paris and was independent for a year. She learned to rely on herself during that period of time and not on Liam, who "made her think that she needed him when he was the one that actually needed her." I think that by the end of the movie, Addie is an adult -- legally and mentally.

I don't know how this turned into a race discussion exactly. I also felt disgusted by Liam's relationship with Addie in the beginning of the film and it had nothing to do with Liam being Asian or Addie being white. Anyone would (or should) feel upset at seeing an adult in their late 20's dating a 16-year-old. Personally, I was mislead by the "romantic comedy" label into picking up this movie because I am white and mostly date Asian guys. So, Liam being Asian and Addie being white didn't make any difference to me in what I viewed as acceptable and unacceptable with their relationship from a legal and moral perspective.

Waychel,

Well put. Most accurate assessment of the film I've seen on here.

reply

You have given a superb analysis of this discussion thread. Welldone. I feel a 30 something shouldn't really get emotionally involved with a teenager.

In this case, I didn't really have a problem with the age difference, but rather with the girl's age. If Liam was 45 and Addie's 32, 33, i wouldn't have any problem with that as both of them would be adults and know what they are doing.

my friend married a guy 15 years her senior, they are still happily married after 6 years with 2 kids. They almost never argue. You can just tell they are so in love with each other when you see them.

reply

Who cares about the freakin age difference if they are both attracted to each other???

If there's one thing asian guys are guilty of is that they tend to overanalyze sh*t way too much. If a horny white dude was getting hit on by a hot 16 year old asian girl, I'm preety sure he wouldn't be stressing out about the age gap. He'd be thinking about hitting it whenever possible!

That is the same mentality asian guys need to adopt. There's no need to be all "conflicted" when a hot chick is into you. Life is too short, just go for it and enjoy the ride while it lasts.

If I was this dude and had a chance with Hayden Panettiere, I would be on that with a quickness!

reply

This wasn't just an age difference. She was underage.

He respected her and that's what makes the movie so sweet. If he treated her like trash, I know there is no way I would have enjoyed this movie nearly as much.

im an asian girl and i have nothing against ken... i've never really seen him in anything. but judging from the imdb picture, i dont really find him that attractive. I think that perhaps if he looked like john cho or that guy who occasional guest star on CSI or that psychologist on Law and Order, then perhaps i think they will match better. but then again, pictures totally dont indicate how well they act or how they actually look onscreen. so who knows.. maybe they will have chemistry?!! but then again, ken looks plainer than the other what i think "good looking asian actors" so perhaps this movie casted him to look realistic. Just like i think hollywood mostly cast guys (of all race) that look soo good that you dont just walk down the street and find guys that look like that. (but i have nothing against that either, i prefer to watch good looking people, its sort of a psychological thing with most people..)

As for age, i have nothing against it. hayden and ken looks around the same age so so i think for that there isn't a huge difference.

Anyways, im off to watching the movie now!

reply

I personally don't find John Cho attractive at all, and I tend to be attracted to Asian guys. (I'm a white girl, BTW, and it's always mystified me why you rarely see Asian males as romantic leads.) I think Ken Leung is really, really hot. Not conventionally hot in the way someone like Will Yun Lee is, but he's got a very expressive face. He looks really good on Lost.

Still didn't like his character much. Self-pity isn't attractive on anyone and I thought Liam was kind of whiny. The age difference really bothered me, too. I think there's something wrong with a guy in his late 20s hooking up with a girl Hayden's age, even when she is 18. Even if she "seems" mature for her age. In my experience, people change a TON even from 21 to 28. What business does a 20-something guy (or a 30-something guy like her Heroes co-star) have in common with a high schooler? I liked Liam's friend as the reality check. But that's my opinion. It's not breaking any laws, but behavior like that on the part of an older man sends up red flags to me. I think once you hit 25 or so, big age differences don't matter. There's just a LOT of learning an 18-year-old has yet to experience. It didn't help that Hayden's character seemed very immature and Lolita-ish.

The age difference was distracting in a way. If it was just about race and fitting in, it would have been a tighter movie.

To Rick James: Thankfully, not every adult male is as desperate or depraved.

Liam did not need to take a 16-year-old girl because unlike his friend Joe, Liam was perfectly capable of approaching adult women and taking them home (like the blond woman from the bar). What Liam had a problem with was opening up to them afterwards and forming any kind of meaningful relationship.

I believe that Liam's character truly cared about Addie and what was best for her, even if he did hold onto her too tightly (IE, discouraging her from going to Paris). Liam cared about Addie enough not to debase their relationship for quick sexual gratification, which I think says a lot about his feelings and respect for her in the film. But it also scared Liam how much he loved Addie too, which is another reason that he turned away from her at times.

There are many reasons why Liam showed reluctance. I do not think that any (normal) 30-year-old wouldn't display reluctance in that situation either.

i read in David Ren's board that this story was somewhat autobiographical. i'm wondering how accurate this situation really is? meeting a 16 yo from well to do neighborhood on board a bus seems contrived if not fantastical. for me that whole premise didn't work for me.

there was definitely a lolita-esque quality to this. i don't know if it was merely a conceit in the story line to draw attention to the movie or if this was supposed to be mirror real life because stuff like this rarely if ever happens.

as far as an asian male lead in the story, there aren't enough asian males coupling with white females in the big screen. it's always the white males coupling with asian females instead.

i read a new york times survey that said asian males have the worst images of any males. even asian american females favor whites, blacks, hispanics over asian males.

it's a shame that there aren't more films with asian male leads.

myeh that big gap age is pretty awkward. and it reminds me the movie "Take the lead" with Dante Basco.. wow.. what are they trying to do with those poor asian (male)-actors? I dont see much positivity for them in Hollywood yet...

I have to agree...no wonder this thing went straight to DVD, I got creeped out just reading the synopsis, and after realizing that Ken Leung is like 37 it just got creepier.

Maybe if they made it about a college girl it would be a lot less creepy.

So far (3 minutes into the movie) it at least seems to include some funny references, although they almost all seem to be the kind of thing that's only funny for a very small amount of people. For example, he mentions that he went to Dalton at the audition at the beginning of the movie, but I'd estimate that 99.8% of Americans would have no idea that that was supposed to be funny. The fact that he's from Queens may or may not have been somewhat humorous as well in a "oh how stereotypically nyc asian" sense, but that would be funny pretty much just for an asian american from Queens. The jab at LA's public transportation only even makes sense since his character knows that other cities have much better public transportation (such as his hometown of NYC), but the vast majority of Americans happen to think of public transporation as sucking or being nonexistent (the only west coast exception in fact is San Francisco, and even on the east coast you're left with the residents of NYC, Boston, and Washington DC).

Point is, it's creepy because of the age difference, and so far all the jokes are in-joke references. On the bright side, the Dalton reference did get a chuckle out of me (and no I didn't go to Dalton).

One other thing that creeps me out is the fact that the only person who's ever called me that has been my brother when we were kids, but that just applies to me lol.

Ok, finished the movie...and it's not really funny enough the rest of the way to really be a comedy at all, so much as a movie that makes very little sense. For one thing you can't just up and move to Shanghai since you need to go through a lot to get a resident visa. And if Kelly Hu's character is so intelligent and well-spoken and speaks pretty good English there'd be no chance in hell her only job opportunity would be being a waitress who "has" to marry some guy...what, her siblings aren't capable of working? Or is Kelly Hu's character supposed to be really young and have really young siblings? Dunno, but seriously a lame plot copout to extract him from China.

That and the fact that Kelly Hu's fake chinese accent was pretty awful. *sigh*
