I expected the film was going to be Americanised (or should that be Americanized?) and be dumbed down a little to cater for a mass audience but I was amazed to find they didn't do that.
I assume many of the references were lost on non-British audiences so this is to all you non-Brits out there: What did you think of the movie?
I'm Dutch, just saw it and i loved it, got all the references because I'm a huge Coogan (Alpha Papa) fan.
My English is probably better than my Dutch anyway and i watch a lot of UK series etc so not surprising i guess.
Fist bump, "paper", had me in stitches... :D
I wouldn't be surprised if the long delay on the release is due to re-shooting some stuff to make more of the observations more universal.

How depressing. The film was made for a british audience so why do we give a toss what non-brits think. Do you think judd apatow would modify his films to cater for non-yanks?
Same here. I also grew up on English comedy while all the other Dutchies were watching terrible Dutch tv. Only years later when my friends also got to watch English stuff without reading subtitles did they start to enjoy it too.
shareAnother Dutch Alan Partridge fan here, who heard him for the first time on BBC Radio Four at the start of his career. I love the film. It has the right tone and good pacing. I laughed out loud several times.
shareI'm an American, and I absolutely loved it! I loved the television series, and was worried that the film would be too lengthy to hold up. But Coogan delivered, as he most always does.
shareI'm from Argentina and I've loved it! But then again, I love Steve Coogan's humor (or Brit humor in general) I've been watching all his films since I saw 24 Hours Party People back in 2002.
I'm from Canada and I found it hilarious. I've never seen the show and am not a huge British comedy fan (so I was seeing this based on good reviews only), but I was laughing throughout the whole movie.

Sitting here with my American missus and she's laughing her head off at most of it. Good comedy is good comedy. The same as I don't get every reference in, say SNL or South Park, someone from outside the UK might not get everything in Alpha Papa but the laughs cross borders.
I did have to explain sacked instead of fired though she found the petrol/gas thing hilarious. There's plenty of open minded Americans with a sense of humour who will enjoy this.
We use “sacked” as well in the States. I’m surprised you had to explain that.
