Is this movie pretentious?

If it is how can you tell? There's definitely a subtext to the relationship between these guys as to whether it's homosexual or not is up for debate-which is always a strength in my book--but is it talking about the disconnect that exists between us all? Or just between these two characters?

The screen writer said she wanted a story with lots of "air" so viewers could bring their own baggage to it, so to speak. And I definitely did. I didn't so much think about the gay issue as worry that Kurt was going to strangle Mark in the massage scene! I don't even like that type of movie. But I was so worried I'd been misled by this quiet little film and that Kurt would turn out to be a sociopath. Thank goodness this did not happen. I loved the movie and watched it again, calmly the second time.

No I didn't think it was pretentious, but I thought that it was pretty dull.

I perfer films where character development is key, but this just didn't have enough--something--to keep me interested.I watched the whole thing thinking that it would get better along the way.

I will say that I was surprised at key the dog was in this.

Unasked for neck and shoulder massages at work = sexual harassment. It struck me as gay and for a moment I wasn't sure if Kurt was going to kill him or try to make love to him. I think Kurt was a latent homosexual who was attached with his friend. As someone else has posted, he realized he was losing him to a woman. They focused on the wedding ring Mark was wearing and the moved it out of sight. It appears the two drove home in silence until Kurt was dropped off. Clearly, Mark was no longer interested in Kurt, he out grew him and it was time to move on. Kurt was last seen walking about aimlessly not knowing what to do. He's a loser.

Yes. It is pretentious and boring, dressed up to supposedly be profound.
