WORST SEQUEL EVER!!!!!!!

Im a huge fan of the original Merlin and was so excited to hear that a sequel was coming, but when I watched it yesterday I was hugely dissapointed.

The story was all over the place and the Lady of the Lake had turned evil??!. Other than Sam and Mirander, NONE of the other actors where back (not even in flash back or past tense) and their on-screen characters where NOT EVEN MENTIONED which makes me think that they didn't want to return or where embarrassd by the terrible script and so steered clear. There was hardly any magic, and Merlin got killed half way through the story in a really pathetic death scene!!!!! He survived Queen Mabs magic, so surely would have been able to defend himself from a mortal sword!!!

Sorry to go on, but in my opinion it was a huge slap in the face and a big insult to the original.

I agree with the review on the main page. 3/10 Why Bother!!!

reply

I have to say I agree with you...

reply

I agree. I cannot believe some people are even giving it above 2.

For me the worst part was "We need both of us combined to do this", which Merlin said to Jack just before raising the bridge. Only it turns out that they didn't need both of them to do it, and Merlin was fine doing it all on his own.
What a ridiculous plot hole.

Not to mention how damn stupid they must have been to miss the fact that Brian was a female. She didn't even disguise her voice!

reply

That was probably why he died so easily actually. If it needed both of them to do it, then standing and doing it all by himself likely weakened him to the point where he couldn't save himself.

I thought this was okay, but not that good. I found it hard to reconcile with the original, being that that one was a complete and full story with a definite ending - being that after growing old as a story-teller, Merlin then found Nimue (sp?) and did the 'make us young' magic so they could then spend the remainder of their lives together in peace in that isolated little place. With that being the case - exactly where does this one fit in? It would probably have worked better if it was done with a different Merlin and taken as a completely separate story rather than a sequel to the other one.

And yeah, what WAS the deal with the Lady? Before she couldn't leave her lake and was neutral/good. Now she's the 'baddie' and is not only able to leave her lake, but has different characteristics and the classic 'I'm bad so I have dark hair' look? Strange to say the least.

reply

I agree with you KaiRea. A different Merlin and a seperate story would have been better. Why oh why Sam Neill decided to return is beyond me. He's such a fine actor and to add this rubbish to his impressive filmography is unforgivable.

reply

I don't even know why Miranda Richardson returned. She is a stunning actress and why she allowed her name to be sullied by this FILTH is... I don't even want to know.

Both actors who returned probably thought that they had an obligation to Hallmark or whatever because if someone else played the parts, it wouldn't be 'true' to the first movie.

reply

I think it was a separate story, and that the key actor/tresses of Merlin came back to play Merlin and the Lady of the Lake.

What would have made more sense is if Jack would have had to stop and I mean stop the whole thing from happening period by warning Merlin or something (especially if it's a sequel)

reply

I think it can't be a sequel... I mean, in the end of "Merlin" the title character lives long enough to tell the story, and meet up with Frik and go back to Nimue, so obiviously if Merlin dies it can't be the same thing.

And what was up with the pig talking in the end? It was funny, but kind of random.

reply

And plus the fact that the Lady of the Lake was Blonde in Merlin and looks more like Mab in this one.

reply

...what a joke!!! i just watched the movie... how can you name it "merlin 2" (so it was, here)?! what about nimue?! where did merlin let her... and the lady of the lake was soooo different and nice before and now that... trying to do a weird kind of voice like map in the original movie. of course - its other directors, they tried to do some kind of "copy" or whatever... well they did bad!!! yeah the girl looked like a girl from the beginning, all their ah-so-funny-jokes were pretty lame and weren't serious, the first movie was a serious good one and now it felt like a "scary movie" or something, well almost... the only nice thing about it was the pig, like in the original the talking horse was;-) i was very very very disappointed... and i also asked myself: why would for example sam neil agree for such a script and movie...?! and then i said to myself - well, actors also need jobs, maybe he had none at the moment... they need to work;-) what a shame he agreed, and also miranda richardson who was just so brilliant in the first movie...

bad bad bad bad bad... sorry but i really didn't like it much...:( 1/10

reply

Well, I've never seen it, but it's on today at noon so
I'm gonna check it out anyway. Although now I'm not really expecting to think very highly of it. That blows, cuz I like the 1st one.

reply

'And what was up with the pig talking in the end? It was funny, but kind of random.'

Actually the horse that was his companion talked at the end of the first movie so its not that random that the pig that was the Apprentice's companion could talk as well.

He does say that doing it himself is what weakened him. It doesn't stop it being utterly ridiculous. Suddenly a supremely powerful sorcerer cannot raise a few bricks into the air without it almost killing him?

reply

Nevermind the fact that the Lady of the Lake faded away AKA died in the first one because noone believed in magic any more.

reply

I agree aswel..

was a boring movie..
and compared to the first 1 very very bad..

reply

should have brought back Jason Done(Mordred) because as I remember he was the highlight of Merlin(according to myself and several critics) and probably could have made it at least a little more...sarcastic

I'll admit, it WAS pretty lame, but if you watch it and ignore the fact that it was advertised as a sequel, it was okay. oh, and it DOESN'T intertwine with the first movie! He made himself young again and was just aging again, it would make perfect sense for him to die in this "second life" although, he could do a lot better magic in the beginning, but by the middle, he dies from a stupid sword and can't hold the bridge up? come on! And what happened to Nimue??? The only good in this movie is the "love stories" between Jack and Brianna; Yvonne and Graham. And YES, brianna disguised her voice the best she could, she WAS a girl, after all, you want her to have a baritone voice? If you listen to it in the beginning and then at the end when she is the new blacksmith in woman's dress, it does sound different. I just wish there had been a better cast, because the dude who played Lord Weston was ugly as crap! And in the beginning, i thought the dude at the table was supposed to be Galahad grown up, since he was a "child" when he got the grail at the end of the first movie, but NO, it's Arthur, looking totally different than he did in Merlin. As a sequel, it sucked, but on its own, with just two of the same actors, i enjoyed it. Didn't LOVE it, but it was alright. Of course, i wouldn't have bought it for $7 at Walmart if I had known it wasn't really a sequel, but it said sequel, and i had never seen it, so i bought it.

reply

true, it does say sequel to Merlin on the dvd cover but it is clearly not. False advertisment in my view. But on its own, I have to agree and say it was ok, only becuase of Sam Neil though. He is the best. In no way did it match up to the first one. I could not watch the whole three hours without taking a break, unlike "Merlin" where I sat on my couch for the three hours without being bored at all.

reply

This movie looks much cheaper then the first one.
And whats the time line?
At the end from Merlin he looks much older than after his 50 yers sleep so i think it was more than 50 years after his final battle with Mab. But Arthur dosnt look so old in Merlin 2. And why he left Nimue?
And in the first movie the magic was more subliminal without blue lights.

reply

caught it on german television last saturday:

what was up with the talking pig in the end anyway? i mean come on, they must be kidding, right?

1/10 - the people involved in this piece of crap should never be allowed to work in the business again.

"the pig's always right." - yeah, right.

reply

I just saw the movie after buying it. After 10 minutes first thoughts of re-selling it entered my head. Now I'm sure. The movie is trash.

reply

I thought it was funny.

reply

It was horrible, now it can join the other terrible sequels and stuff that shouldn't have been made like emo spidey 3

reply

yeah really bad movie. Also one of Sam Neill worst performances nad that brinna person was actually painful to watch try act. Loved the first merlin movie but this one sucked, bad action, bad script and bad editing not to mention waaaay to long.

reply

I just saw it Sunday night and fell through parts of the movie. But it looked totally different from the first one.
