A great social commentary, and truly innovative for today's zombie film

Ulli Lommel has taken the zombie genre to an all new level. In this great social commentary he plays on your stereotypes and prejudices of what to expect from a Hollywood production. Plays, and then completely destroys them. The result is what is truly the most innovative zombie flick of our time.
The production value is astronomical. Obviously working with budget constraints, the film crew did an excellent job of reproducing a realistic police station complete with squad cars. The lights on set are cleverly disguised as lights at the station, and the plumbing of the warehouse they filmed in is well hidden. Rumor has it that Ulli only had a few gallons of paint for the entire set due to budgeting, but as we can clearly see Ulli prevailed.
The scariest thing about the zombies is at first you don't realize these are zombies. That is quite possibly the most innovative thing about this film, because it waits...until you think it's safe...and then it isn't safe. You will find that you are constantly asking yourself, "Is it safe?"
The actors are most definitely the driving force of this film. Gunther Ziegler is downright creepy, and gives you chills to the bone. The idea of the German born character from a southern state plays off well, as the accent is clearly discernible as southern, and gives him a plausible past. One often wonders if Ziegler himself was the son of a maniacal psychiatrist in a torture ward of the mental hospital, as you feel this man was born to play this role. And let me say this. The torture scenes in the mental hospital are unforgettable.
As tensions peak, a fight erupts between two officers of the law, both determined to get to the bottom of the matter and torn between their conflicting and apparent interests. A crew of the officers are bound together by a past bound by the blood of war, and their loyalty tested throughout. This movie connects with many on an emotional level, and you feel a deep attachment to even the most ancillary of characters.
Many would expect a Romanian immigrant to have nothing to do with practicers of Voodoo, and that is the point when you realize Lommel has you. The ties she has are feasible and the protection curse was quite realistic to someone as myself, who has never performed Voodoo professionally.
As for gore, I was quite disturbed. I do not say that about many movies. During one eating session in particular, you realize how ruthless these sexy and mostly middle aged fem-zombies are. They take no prisoners, and even though they can live off regular food, they thirst for blood.
Lommel has created one of the most scocking and disturbing zombie flicks. Ever. The social commentary is deep and thought provoking. The only challenge you have now is get off that computer chair, chum up a few dollars for that obscure rental house that seemingly has every movie, and watch this movie.

that's funny, Mr. Ulli. I don't think anyone else would have any praise for this movie.

I must concur that "Zombie Nation" stands out among the many wonderful selections on Fearnet.com. I could not decide if I wanted to watch ZN or if I should just watch paint dry. I chose Zombie Nation, and boy did I make the right choice! This movie has everything $5 can buy. The leading man pulls off the role of a sadistic unintelligle cop with a skill rivaling all but the most talented mimes. His take on a mentally challenged war vet with a strong desire to play doctor with any chick that he sees is stomach churning. Seriously, just try to watch this guy and not puke your guts out. Speaking of gore, this movie has just as much gore as it has intelligent dialogue and relatable characters.
The torture scenes are not in the least bit silly, and they never made me wonder what happened to me, where I am not only wasting my time watching this, but writing a sarcastic review. It seems they used to spank patients with dowel rods, which I was unable to discern from their reactions if it was a punishment or a reward. After a while, I decided that it did not matter nor did it take away from my enjoyment. In fact, if you truly want to enjoy this movie, just forget every scene as soon as it is over. Trust me, it makes the ending seem more realistic.
THen there were parts that I can't explain, but they sure did add to the experience. The obnoxious chick that wants to screw her way to freedom, the fact that the protagonist changes part way through and never does anything heroic anyway, and the voodoo ladies that resurrect the dead chicks for virtually no reason other than to shove snakes up their cooters. One of the best parts has some turd pretending to be a doctor who just smacks the evil cop and repeats like 100 times, "is it safe?" I am not sure what he is asking in reference to, but something tells me he was asking his assistant if his investors were still waiting for him to explain how he wasted their $5. This guy is clearly not in the same calibur as the rest of this distinguished cast. My only guess is that the director felt sorry for the butt nugget and decided to cast this unknown guy as a stuttering doctor. Another great part is when the evil cop is molesting the Romanian slut. I know I was supposed to feel some sort of anxiety for her, but I seriously did not care. The fact that she was the hottest chick says more about the quality of hoes in eastern europe(I mean LA, right, LA) than about her questionable attractiveness. She has a nice rack, and dresses slutty, but something about a girl who does not realize that cuffs are a bit much for jaywalking seems to deserve being injected with a mystrey substance, getting an alligator stuffed up her crotch by some voodoo hag, and then being forced to live the rest of her existence as a zombie racoon.
The ending was inspired. The zombies become cops, which may seem silly, but not if you are a 3 year old. This sets the stage for Zombie Nation 2 - Watch Free or Suck It Hard. Then Zombie Nation 3 and beyond. Because, when your idea is as amazing as this, well sequels are inevitable, just like Leprechaun and Chucky. Oh, and before you start to watch this or any other Lommel film, I would recommend a strong dose of skunk and a jug full of the shine, cause otherwise this film sucks.

the "is it safe" doctor was the director...

"I'm not going to ask you again, where is my willy wonka bar?"

The simple answer--I get bored
The longer answer--I get bored at work
The full answer--I get bored at work, develop a bad attitude, and release my frustrationon blogs rather than coworkers.

I have a question--Why would you read that long of a post for a craptastic movie? Are you a fan?
