Why does a Welshman play a German?

Why is the central character in a film directed by a German about a German serving in the US Navy portrayed by a Welshman? There are many good actors in Germany who could have played the roll.

Werner Herzog specifically wanted Bale for the film (he has called him the best actor of his generation). There is also a strong physical resemblance between Bale and Dieter when he was younger. Keep in mind, this was Herzog's first English language "Hollywood" film so the nationality of the actor is unimportant in the end.

this whole german kid bombed by americans in ww2 turned into an american jetfihter pilot and now bombs vietnamese thing is cheesy, stupid, irrational and absurd.

The rest of the movie is good.

some people's disdain... and/or their ignorance of history... is cheesy, stupid, irrational and absurd.

This is not just a 'movie' where critics on their swivel chairs can sh*T on. those people in the 'story' aren't just 'characters' that viewers can judge and pick apart and forget after a number of weeks. this all happened in REAL LIFE. There's life outside of this little modern bubble you're living in, and believe it or not, people have and still experience the most stupid, irrational and absurd things.. least of them are cheesy, in fact most of them are horrible. This film demonstrated the truth, unlike many films nowadays that just want to embellish (and eventually cover up) the truth with more drama and special effects.

It's ironic you speak of a "modern bubble", when you try and say "all" of this movie happened in real life.

Take a look at this:

I know about the real story even before reading that thread.

Naturally there are a lot of omission and changes to the film. Many war films (Patton, Back to Bataan, Band of Brothers series [where they killed off one guy in the story Alfred Blithe, and his family was upset at that; he survived for another 20 years], Pacific series, etc) differ from real life in order to deliver a more succinct story, but the overall message remains the same. In every movie there is always an error to whine about, but let's be honest -- Can't put every single detail in, or the movie will last for 20 hours at least.

by the way, I was talking to that kid who was trolling around, claiming the whole movie is "cheesy, absurd, german kid went to become american fighter pilot, bombing vietnamese things etc. etc etc etc" basically the same generic panning wiseass comment made by lazy teenagers who dont lift a finger to read the biography, not even the outline of the Vietnam war.
No matter how much opinions change, it is disgusting to see naive pricks to denigrate and belittle the sacrifices of those veterans as "cheesy absurd," and all the other adjectives that enters his head.

Thanks Kronos....couldn't agree more, the pillock even said he was a "Jetfighter pilot" silly sod didn't notice that big fan-like thing on the planes nose;
Yet feels qualified to criticise the idea of a German being capable of learning English & the ability to fly an aeroplane.

The answer is very simple...Bale is the best actor out there and can play any role given to him.

I hate IMDb sometimes! They are never any when you need it.

The question should be "Why does a Welshman play a German so well?"

---------
"Youth is wasted on the young" George Bernard Shaw

Hmm, I thought the whole point of acting was to pretend. And that's what he did, he pretended that he was a german.

Why don't you complain about the fact the they didn't get a real mentally retarded man to play Sam in I am Sam, instead of Sean Penn? Or hire actual gay guys in Brokeback Mountain? This whole discussion is just stupid.

Also... I can kill you with my brain

ummm, because he's an actor?! was Hillary Swank wrong for playing a guy? lol ;)

reply

Do you also complain about Oscar Schindler being played by an Irishman?
Christopher Colombus being played by a Frenchman?
Adolf Hitler being played by Charlie Chaplin?

The list goes on..... they're actors playing a part. If the movie was a German production then the actors may have been German, Der Untergang for example, or Das Leben der Anderen.
