Dean Winchester Completes Me!

I've been asked to kick off the new Dean Squad, and I was trying to remember the old title suggestions that had been kicked around before imdb closed down, and this is the only one that comes to immediate mind. It can always be changed, I guess.

I looked at the old Dean Squad courtesy of StickingupforDean, and I'm using some of her good suggestions here.

Obviously this thread is dedicated one of the most awesome characters on TV, Dean Winchester; and to Jensen Ackles, the incredibly talented actor who brings him to life.

SPOILER WARNING:
This thread may contain spoilers for episodes already aired in the USA and Canada. Spoiler tags will only be used for 24 hours after the episode has aired in the last timezone. Spoiler tags for FUTURE episodes must be used at all times!

The rules are simple:

1. You must love Dean Winchester and Jensen Ackles.
2. No bashing of the character, the actor, the actor's significant other or other family is allowed.
3. We're here to have fun and not take ourselves too seriously!

If other rules need to be instituted at a later date, they will, but as long as we all play nice, I don't anticipate having to wag the finger.

I honestly don't think we need a member list - this thread is open to anyone who loves Dean Winchester and Jensen Ackles. But if folks want a running member list to be included, I will go back and do that.

Any other ideas, throw them out.

Dean Winchester rules!

Thanks for doing this PA!

reply

Hey PA! Thanks for kicking off the new Dean thread :)

reply

Thanks PA. I don't think there's any real need for a member list either. I hope this site sees more action once the new season begins. As I've said before, I prefer this site over PTV. It's more like the old imdb message boards format.

I'm still pretty miffed over the treatment of Dean this past season. The "Can YOU fix it?" line spoke volumes to me. I know it's Jensen on my screen... but who is this Dean Winchester fellow we're seeing?😠

reply

I was fuming over that line. I have not enjoyed a lot of this season because the writers have forgotten who Dean Winchester is.

Glad everyone is liking the new thread. Thanks to Bella & CluelessDrifter for suggesting we start new character/actor threads across the board. :)

This has been a very demoralizing season for Dean fans, no question about that. Where is our guy, the badass, the one who knew how to do things, the one who didn't stand back against the wall and wait for someone to tell him what to do? I assume that's going to be what most of the conversation here will be about up until the new season starts.

Will it get any better for Dean in season 13? Personally I don't have a lot of faith that it will if the CW is not making any showrunner changes.

I was waiting to hear if Carver would be back on the heels of Frequency's cancellation since his name still appeared in the credits as a producer all year long. I don't know if he has anything else lined up, but I haven't heard anything about him coming back to SPN in a proactive manner either. Not that he was all that proactive when he was showrunner, that was my biggest complaint about him at the time. But obviously, compared to Dabb's tenure, Carver must have had some kind of influence over the writing that is now sorely missing. And it does seem like Dean's characterization bore the full brunt of Dabb's vision.

reply

One theory/rummer is that Carver might take over for Singer. He wouldn't be showrunner but he would at least have some influence over the flow of the episodes/editing going forward. I think Dabb/Carver might be able to curb BuckLemming more than Dabb/Singer can.

reply

There isn't anything to give credence to this is there? I thought it was just wishful thinking.

reply

No I think it is just speculation but Carver is out of a job and Singer really wants to be retired so logically it would make sense.

reply

But would Carver be willing to go from SPN/his other show(?) showrunner to reporting to Dabb? I have my doubts. I sure want something done about Dabb though and I would love for Singer to leave. I had understood he was responsible for cutting the purgatory storyline short along with other Dean storylines.

reply

Singer is listed first in the Exec Producer credits over Dabb. If Carver assumes Singers duties I believe he would be Dabb's superior not the other way around.

I agree, IF Carver came back - and unfortunately I think that's just a pipe dream now - he'd take the top showrunner spot again. Carver was listed before Singer in the credits when he was showrunner, which is how it should be. Singer has always been mostly the budget guy - so it was always suspicious to me that he was given the top spot credit over Dabb instead of the other way around.

reply

But wouldn't the most senior person come first anyway, Singer has been there since the beginning Dabb since S4?

Not necessarily - it depends on the role they play BTS. Singer's primary duties in the showrunning capacity have mostly been budgetary.

reply

Correcting myself - my bad. I just caught the credits of a season 9 episode, and, you're right, Singer came before Carver in the credits. So I guess Singer has always been given seniority since Gamble left - she's the one who had the top credit at the time.

I think Carver had solo showrunner credit in season 10 when Singer stepped back into a consulting role and was headed out the door for retirement. Then season 11 happened and Carver was leaving, so they pulled Singer back into a showrunner position again, which was a mistake, IMO.

However, I do remember when Glass was hired in season 6 and Gamble immediately made him her #2 over every other writer who had been on staff for years. So rankings aren't necessarily etched in stone.

reply

I very much want that to be true but it is all wishful thinking. It's too late to change this, they are writing season 13 right now. Worse still, there is no indication that anyone at the CW has a problem with season 12 at all. Even Jensen seems happy with his role this year. I have no interest in 13, I have no hope that Dabb will do anything for Dean fans and all I believe all they will do is give the big kills to the spin-off auditions and have them save Dean for easy badass cred. I am actually glad we are in hiatus and I am seriously thinking about not coming back.

reply

Our only hope is that Singer might retire mid season like he did in S10 (hopefully taking his wife with him this time) and Carver could be the one who would take over. If the ratings continue to fall the WB and Mark Pedowicz might want to see a change in leadership. I think at this point the J's and everyone else is just trying to ride it out until they hit 300 eps. After that the J's have both expressed the desire (and I have heard they might be actually negotiating contracts to this effect) to do a shortened season of 4-6 episodes. If that is the case there wouldn't be a need for a showrunner, just good to great guest writers that would be able to focus the show on the brothers and one complete ''mini series" type season.

reply

Are you talking about fourteen being the mini season?

reply

From the way the J's are talking they could do several years of mini series type seasons but I would guess they would like to start with S14. Both JJ and Thomas will be in school by then and I think the guys want to spend more time at home.

reply

That makes a lot of sense. I would rather they would do a few mini seasons rather than SPN to just be gone. I do think the quality would probably (I hope) go up.

reply

I would say season 14 would have at least 13 episodes. That would get them to the 300 they seem fixed on. After that who knows? Last year the J's were talking about a movie or series of movies like Gilmore Girls. Then it changed to 8 episode runs. Last week, they seemed more interested in 6 episode stories that take place in one town. I don't know where the 4 episode talk came from unless it was the Gilmore girl/netflix type scenario they floated before. Makes it seem even more likely that Dabb and crew will get to ride this into the ground and send the show off with a whimper.

reply

Jared mentioned 4 episodes because that is what they did with GG. But I think 6 would have to be the least they could do on the CW. Otherwise it would be a Netflix series.

In my Rainbows and Unicorn world Dabb won't be interested in a series like that because the pay won't be enough....:)

reply

I think we're stuck with Dabb too.

reply

A shortened season (6 or 8 episodes) seems to be the way of the future. It's what Brit TV has been doing for years with its series. It would work well for Supernatural. Keep the show alive and and hopefully quality over quantity. And free the Js up for either family time or a movie role.

It's a win-win. I really don't want the show dragged into a 23 episode long season 14. Not with Dabb in charge.

reply

I think I agree

reply

No offense but I have a real love hate relationship with British shows. They are sooooo good but so short and the actors rotate much more frequently. Also, there is no rhyme or reason to the seasons (or series) they can go years between episodes. I always hated that and I hate that american TV is starting to go down that road. However, 6 good episodes of Sam and Dean a year is far better than the breadcrumbs we have gotten the past two seasons. With a decent budget and J2 being totally invested in the shoot it could be really good, like stranger things. Better locations, extended fight scenes, stories solely about Sam and Dean with both of them getting equal attention and I am in.

reply

We might get more total Sam and Dean screen time in 6 episodes than we get now with 23.

I feel the same. I don't enjoy shows with miniature seasons and crazy long hiatus. I find them incredibly unsatisfying. I've always loved the 22-episode American formula.

That said, I'm in favor of shorter seasons for SPN because we have a decade's worth of 22+ episodes seasons. Anything after season 13 is a gift horse and they can wrap it however they want, I won't be looking for teeth.

reply

I have no interest in 13 (...) I am actually glad we are in hiatus

Same for me. I've seen nothing that would lead me to believe that things will improve in season 13.

Just seen this thread, so pleased you agreed to open it PA, you seemed the perfect person to run the Squad. I've been trying to get this board back to what we used to have and starting the old squads seemed appropriate as we all love to gush about our favorite actor. I love Dean, even though at times I don't express it as often as I should, I am, however, passionate about both brother's and love them to bits. Love the new squad and that posters are happy it's back.

reply

Lovely, hopefully we get lots of goodness to post here! Certainly seems as if Jensen had a good time at JIB8 - such a kind man.

reply

Yeah the supernatural board on imdb was like that during summer hiatus. Give it time and we may see an up swing during the summer and more once it returns.

reply

Good title....Dean Winchester does rule though.

reply

So Dean Winchester and Jensen. He was one of the performers of the week for Who We Are. I think Jensen pulled that episode and as much of the season as possible out of the fire with that unbelievable performance. In fact if it hadn't been for Regarding Dean and his scene with Mary in WWA the entire season would have been a bust for me.
Hopefully Dabb and co. will remember their greatest asset next year.

reply

I got the impression from a comment in the comment section by a tvline person that Jensen may have won or been a runner up but wasn't given it because he was recognized last Feb. The tvline person didn't come out and say that but they did mention his recognition in Feb when a commenter said how much Jensen deserved the recognition. Just a thought.

If ever an actor deserves an emmy it's Jensen.

reply

Have to agree with you there. Wonder if it would be possible to get the CW to at least nominate him.

reply

Kripke said that if SPN was on a "classier" network and not a genre show that Jensen would have been nominated for "The End".

reply

I'm on TV Line and I commented on the article and I believe Matt said Jensen wasn't mentioned because he was already honored for "Regarding Dean".

reply

People have probably already seen this, but I thought I'd put it here anyway.
