also in one of the earlier seasons i think s2 or s3 robin implies that she knows her aunt is a lesbian, i think even says that the other woman is her "lover" but then in s8 when barney says her aunt is a lesbian robin is in denial about it and thinks that she isn't
Yeah, that one get me too. There's a part in the first episode ("Stuff" - Season 2 Episode 16) where Lily says "they love dogs", "they" meaning lesbians or gay people in general, and Robin asks what Lily means by "they" so Lily covers up what she meant. I thought Robin's reaction meant she was offended that Lily was stereotyping all lesbians/gay people as being the same, but when I saw the next episode ("The Autumn of Break-Ups" - Season 8 Episode 5) it is made clear that Robin didn't know about her aunt's sexuality.
It's the "lover" part that makes this confusing, as you are aware. To this day, I don't know if they originally intended the joke to be what I thought it was, and forgot or Robin was never scripted to say "lover" and Colby Smulders simply got it wrong, and no one noticed until after it was too late to change it (e.g. the episode had already aired) - maybe Robin was supposed to say "friend" or "special friend" but since Colby knew the joke was that Robin didn't know that Betty (Maureen in "Autumn of Break-Ups") was her aunt's lover she could have said the word "lover" as kind of Freudian slip, since the word may have been in her mind?
