What was with the jail period?

I liked this show for the first season or so, but I remember losing interest when Earl went to jail for a long stretch in the second or third season. It felt like the entire premise and focus of the show shifted at that point for no good reason and I just stopped watching. I guess he got out of jail later and the show went back on track, but I never came back.

How long was he in there, anyway? Half a season or so? My memory of that's a little fuzzy.

He was in jail for the first half (12 episodes) of season 3. You should go back and watch them. They were actually pretty good.

I thought the season would be dumb also but it wasn't. There were a lot of funny episodes.

I think it was a good idea because prior to it there were a lot of references to several felonies he never got caught for. Stole the hot dog cart, countless burglaries & petty thefts, impersonating a cop, etc. In a way it was implausible for neither Earl, Randy, nor Joy to ever have done considerable jail time, even when they were filmed by Cops. Then again, I know a guy who also stole a police car and didn't spend much time in a jail and another guy who basically committed a federal crime by stealing copper wire from a railroad, taking it across a state line, and selling it for scrap, but he got off easy.

Are you in the KY/WV/VA region? Just curious cause of the copper theft.

I don’t recall the show saying it but I thought of the prison spell being karma catching up. Earl’s sentence was two years but all the crimes he committed probably would have added up to more than two years had he been caught. Joy was an awful person and karma never caught up to her but the show tried to be a positive one showing how people can change and it would have been dark to see Joy go away.

The prison episodes are are actually my favourite of the entire 4 seasons.
