I Expected This Film to Be...

like The Girl With A Pearl Earring. I hadnt seen the trailer, nor read anything beforehand. I had thought: "Goya's a painter. So, this might be some romantic, artsy, love film. I liked Girl With A Pear Earring a lot, so, this movie's for me!"

Boy, was I wrong!?

That cut to the torturing scene caught me totally off guard and shook me right to the core. Honestly, I DID NOT expect a movie about a revival of the Inquisition and the turmoils of revolution! I felt snug and comfortable im my seat, enjoying the opening, dismssing... ignoring even all hints of menacing things to come (and in hindsight, I cant see WHY I didnt read the signs, because there were many!). And then it hit me right in the face: That scream of fear and agony! I was shaken for the rest of the movie! I siriously considered walking out - not because it was bad, but because I couldnt bear to see anymore torturing happening. Then, when they were about to put Bardem's character to the question, I was ready to cover my eyes and ears. "Not again", I thought. "I know he deserves it, BUT nobody should have to endure that!"

Well, I didnt walk out. And Im glad I didnt, for it was a good movie. Hard to stomach emotionally, but well worth the money! And it made me quit watching trailers, for it makes the movie better if you dont know what You're in for until it hits you. ; )

Good for you! I wish I had seen this movie on its initial run in the theaters which I sadly missed. I’m an avid movie goer and I’m surprised I missed this nugget. There are not so many films out there with such high quality production. Portman was unforgettable and so Bordem.
