A film so absurd, ridiculous and downright dumb that....

even Val Kilmer left halfway through.

Aha good one I agree 100 % but you got to admit it was a little entertaining nonetheless...

OP suspend your belief and logic for a while and just enjoy the movie.

Impossible. People want to watch movies to escape reality, then bitch and whine when reality is too far removed.

Ahhh, humans. *beep* hypocrites.

You make it sound as if everybody is depressed.
People don't necessarily watch movies to escape reality. They watch movies to be entertained (emotionally and intellectually).

I'd like to quote Ridley Scott's own words:

"Science Fiction is such a wonderful possibility where anything goes. And the danger where anything goes, the meal's too rich, unless you really box it in and actually create your own rulebook. I don't give a sh*t if the box is epic. Make sure you got parameters where anything "can't" go. You NEED restrictions!"

In Deja Vu, at first, sending a human being back in time is not even remotely theoretically possible. Then two minutes later it suddenly IS. Sending a warning note back that gets people killed didn't change time because according to the rules "you can't change time because it has already happened".
Yet in the end, Doug is able to change time somehow, ignoring the movie's own rulebook.
When you try to change time, it's either within the same timeline or an alternate timeline. It can't be both. The movie needs to make up it's mind.
It's not a matter of suspending disbelief. The logic just doesn't make any sense. And frankly, it's an insult to the viewer's intelligence.

Exactly, just because a story is "escapist" doesn't mean it doesn't have to follow its own logic.

Here, I'd say that you're expressing a theory. Branch Universe Theory is a theory which is not universally held. This means that there are many theories. These aren't the movies own rules. Shanti seems to believe in Branch Universe Theory and, clearly, Denny does not! In your parlance, there is more than one "rule" in this movie. Branch Universe Theory and destiny (one outcome which cannot be altered) cannot co-exist. It's one or the other.

If there was one rule, Carlin could never save Claire EVEN IF he could go back in time (AND SURVIVE). Context clues at Claire's house proved to Carlin that he had indeed already gone back in time. So, since he has already done it, according to Denny, he has to do it.

Pryzwarra even seemed to expect Carlin to come back, in my estimation. It was almost as if he told Denny with a wink and a nod (I'm leaving you alone such that I don't know what happens), "turn out the lights when you're done." He seemed to understand Denny's unresolved feelings but felt "okay" enough about not overseeing the shutdown.

Denny expected Carlin's call. He even said as much. Maybe they all kinda knew that Carlin had already gone back in time. They are pretty smart (and it's not that hard to figure out).

As for sending a person back, it was a few days before that issue came to fruition and they weren't really 100% sure that it would work. But it has to work because it already has worked, right?

Now, as for sending the note back, it was impossible and THEN, two minutes later, it was not only possible, it was worth $10 billion to try it!! And they had the equipment already rigged to house the sheet of paper. Somebody else questioned that on another page.

reply

The so called "rules" were not tried and true. They were really educated guess that proved to be wrong.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

Amen. I friggin love this flick! I felt every moment when his observing Claire lingered as he slowly came to care for her. I love this movie.

reply

I agree, it's one of the most laughable movies ever. I almost fell asleep too since it was boring and extremely predictable.

reply

Oh, yeah, the chase that was done simultaneosly in the past and the present was the thing that was particularly boring and send me to a 12-hour sleep although I had slept 12 hours in a row before I woke up just in time to turn this *beep* boring and predictable movie on :)

reply

You have to be freaking insane to think that scene was boring

reply

And you have to be freaking insane to not sense that sarcasm

reply

oh yes, you're right, my bad

reply

:)
The entire Team had to leave halfway through because we had to be given time to forget about them, so we didn't ask questions at the end about how all their last hours had suddenly been scrubbed out.

reply

If you take this movie seriously then a pox on you sir.

reply

Probably one of the most train wrecked twists in film.

I agree, it requires serious suspension of disbelief and some people are good at it, but for the later half of this movie...you really are stretching such tolerance

reply

I thought it was kinda fun. Not an intellectual challenge, nor a triumph of writing. Just kinda fun. Certainly worth a $3 rental.

reply

What pissed me off was that Denzel can somehow use a laser pointer on their big TV and what's her face saw it in the past. If that's the 'gateway' then what is that flux capactitor doing in the back? They had to use that to send their note through when they could have just made a paper airplane and thrown it at the screen.

reply

well sir.. I think i just sharted in your beak. pardon me

Hey, you're absolutely right. I didn't even think of this until I read your post.

it's dumb in that it's implausible, but if such a time machine existed(requires a good deal of suspension of disbelief), then it's rather a clever film. that's if you understood all the details. at first glance, maybe simple. but there are a few layers to it.

reply

Agreed. I watched it twice in a row to appreciate the layers, and loved it.
