What Would You Do?

If you and your partner or a friend were in the room and realized the horror film you were watching had taken place in that same motel what would you do to escape?

I think i would hide under the duvet and cry as i am a massive wimp!

reply

I'm pretty cool, so I'd probably just take their knives off them, dodging any gunfire, and then run because I'm also fast.

reply

Sure, and when you wake up the bed is always wet, am I right?

reply

No, that's strange. Must just be you?

You should probably get that checked out.

reply

Ditto. I'd die like the pathetic coward that I am! Even if I found a gun, I'd have to throw it at them as a distraction because I wouldn't have a clue how to fire it...

reply

What would you do if after you throw the gun, it accidentally fires at them and kills two of them?

Many people think running for the car as soon as possible would be a good idea. But, I think the moment you stepped into that room, they've got their eyes on you all the time. I'm pretty sure they got at least one guy ready to stop you before you reach the car.

What David did in the film was pretty clever enough. I'm not sure I would be able to come up with the same plans as he did, or do things better. If I manage to not get panicked after I've realized about the tapes, I'd try to barricade the door and windows with the bed, tear the sheet and try to cover as many possible hiding places for a camera. Then I'd fashion a weapon from anything I could find, try to find a place to hide either in the room, ceilings, or in the bathroom. Though they'd probably find me anyway and I'd suffer the same fate as the previous victims. But I'm hoping at least I could ambush them when they try to find me. That'll give me some fighting chance. Still, it's a slim chance that I would be able to make it. People with military training would have a better chance in this situation, I guess.

Some factors that most people forget to consider is that at the time, both David and Amy were already very tired. In that situation, chances are you might not be able to think as good as you normally do. The situation is indeed really scary.

I know what MacGyver would do if he were in that room, though. He'd turn the tv into a taser gun. Then the director would just cut to the credit roll.

I would have died. I honestly think the couple was pretty smart and I doubt I would have been as smart in a situation like that. Especially since I would have been very tired to begin with and I need MUCH sleep.
But I probably would have thrown every little thing in the room at them...
However, I would have never stayed hearing those screams while I was in the lobby. I would have walked out at that very moment and returned to my car.

I was once in a sticky situation while babysitting when I was a teenager. Lucky, I knew the house very well and knew all the great hiding places from playing hide and go seek. We hide in a closet, that had a trapped door, while two men went through the house looking for valuables. The little boy was terrified, he was making some noises and his sister put her hand over his mouth. We heard the gravel and a car taking off. I tentatively looked to see if they were still there as the kids stayed behind in the hiding place. When it was okay to come out, we ran next store to the neighbor as I went back to call their mother and then the police. When you're in something so unexpected, your mind races looking for anything to try to get out of a situation that you never thought in a million years you would ever be in. So, when I see movies like this and knowing that the characters don't know their way around and the bad guys do, I find it a little hard to believe they would stumble upon a hiding places and escape tunnel from the trapped door in the bathroom. The home team always has the advantage over the visitors. Those two guys robbed numerous houses in the neighborhood got caught after a man had a rifle and held them while his wife called the police.

I would never end up in that situation because my husband is smart, has a great sense of direction, knows how to fix cars and carries a gun.

It would never happen to me because I ALWAYS have my .357 with me when I travel. In my car door while I'm driving and under my pillow while I sleep. So if they were watching my reaction to someone banging in my door, they'd have seen me take the gun (I call him Charlie Sheen...He's always loaded, and he always wins.) out of my purse, spin the chamber to make sure it's loaded and in working order, and tuck it under my pillow. Come in if you want to, but you'll be leaving in a Ziploc bag or two.

There are probably two main theories of what to do: stand your ground and fight, or run.

If you look at each logically, running probably offers the best chances for survival.

The problem with fighting is you don't know how many attackers you are facing, and if they are armed with guns, so you should probably assume that. Going on that assumption, you're screwed. Plus, even if there are only two guys with knives, that's still going to be difficult to deal with, since you will have to come up with an improvised weapon.

Best bet would be to sprint together and plan on heading towards the darkest and most wooded place possible. If you could lose the attackers you could likely just hide, or maybe just sneak far enough away to find the highway again the next day. Don't split up - if they caught one of you, they could use that to bring the other out. And, if caught you would then have to fight, so strength would be in numbers.

In the film, once the couple went through the tunnels and got into the gas station area, trying to sneak out and run would still probably be best. But, at that point just waiting to ambush the attackers would also be an option. They had been smart up until then, but at that point they did the cliché dumb horror movie move and sat and talked, then watched the whole thing with the police officer. If nothing else, look for a better weapon at that point.
