This is not a horror

This is not a horror, but a thriller, just like
Pulp Fiction is not a horror movie but a thriller.

What just cos you like it,it cant be a horror film right?.Borderland is clearly a horror film (ritual murder, prolonged machete murders etc, etc) just because it isnt presented exactly like the exorcist or the evil dead doesnt mean it isnt,'borderland' and its reliance on dread building setpieces that climax with sadistic violent death has more in common with most horror films than 'pulp bloody fiction'.

Like i said the 'horror' movie genre has moved on in terms of incorporating different flavours into it's overall pallette in the last decade or so.If you think horror begins and ends with freddy kruegar and mindless gore than your
selling your intelligence and the genre way too short.'borderland' is a great example of what a horror movie is and can be in the 21st century.End of.

Thriller = disguised horror.. The same.

I believe Lovecraft had a quote to the effect that "horror is where you look for it."

Think Texas Chainsaw Massacre: horror classic based on real events with nothing supernatural (as far as I can remember; it's been a while).

Despite my own argument, I agree with those who say Borderland isn't horror, or to be more accurate: Borderland isn't PROPER horror. It has less to do with how it's done than with what's happening. Yeah, there's a couple of gruesome scenes but it mostly follows the pattern of an action/crime movie:

! SPOILERS !

- a mission goes wrong and a cop is left scarred for life (crime)
- 3 college friends go on a trip to unknown places abroad (horror)
- they have fun; one of them, Ed, falls for a local girl, Valeria...
- ...while the other, Phil, is kidnapped by local gangs (crime)
- they look for him, go to the police, can't find him, get help from the girl's cousin, Lupe (crime/horror)
- meanwhile, Phil talks with his kidnappers, tries to escape (crime/horror)
- Henry confronts the two gang members who follow them (crime)
- Lupe and Henry are brutally killed (horror)
- a satanic kind of ceremony is being performed as Phil is being sacrificed (horror)
- with the help of the cop, Ed and Valeria sneak into the drug lord's villa and kill him (crime)
- they escape but the gang has followed them and a shootout ensues, with gunfires and fistfights (crime)

I also think the way it was directed wasn't strange and scary enough.

Some of the people here don't seem to understand what "horror" means.

A thriller tends to focus around politics, economics, and crimes such as kidnappings, robberies, or drug dealing, with very little gore except what's part of the action (such as being shot). Once you start getting into torture cults and gore -- yeah, that is a horror, and NOT a thriller.

Both of them have heart-pounding moments, but their objectives, and how they accomplish them, are entirely different.

I bet all the people who were killed and sacrificed felt like they were in a f'ing "horror nightmare" when they were being killed in the true events... by the way that real woman priestess used to live 2 blocks from my house...I am from Matamoros Mexico...were this happened, I was 8 year old...

Annnnnnnnnd that would make Hostel a thriller, or Friday the 13th. Night of the Living Dead could be called biological science fiction. Hell, let's call Nightmare on Elm Street an exercise in psychological drama with metaphysical overtones.

Genres are just a way for stores to figure out what shelf to put movies on. Your post is pointless.
