Misunderstood horror masterpiece.

Great film. It has great acting, cinematography, and music. Eli Roth really sells that you are in a foreign"utopia". The sex scene for example is incredibly filmed. The lighting, camera work and music is just amazing. Almost as if you are a dream like state. When the illusion is broken it feels almost too real. Its quite similar to human sex trafficking and its pretty creepy and believable. Awesome film beep the haters.

I agree, I hope this one earns a larger cult following as the years go on...

I like it, the sequel kind of ruined it for me when it came out though...this is much better as a stand alone film. I do think it would be better if the characters were more developed (the girl drowning thing was LAME), some parts were too juvenile and silly (some of the dialogue, the chainsaw bit was lol worthy), and the eyeball effect was embarrassing (two stars off for that) but other than that I loved it.

They should have kept the deleted bit before Josh's death though, that was eerie.

I "Like" the sequel but i agree with you it could have been far better. But at least its not Hostel 3. Awful film IMO.

A lot of the hate seems to be because it's 'torture porn'. Seems to me like it's too graphic for some people and they can't bare to watch it or find it uncomfortable. It's a horrror movie though so like come on! What do you want?

Reminds me a bit of people who cry to the heavens about jump scares, I've seen some liken them to a comedian tickling your feet to make you laugh, basically it's an easy way to succeed and is 'cheating'. Anytime I see someone complaining about jump scares I just assume that they startle easily and can't stand being scared.

Unrelated to this movie, but my issue with jump scares comes from when that's all a movie has. I think they are more effective when used sparingly. I have complained about them when it's just one after another because I feel they lose their effectiveness. My favourite types of horror movies are the ones that creep me out, or at least provide an atmosphere of uneasiness. When all a movie has is cheap jump scares, I don't find it scary at all.
