It is pretty obvious that Josh was gay. He did bond with the older man from the train. He didn't really seem interested in other woman. He put his hand on the train guys knee. Paxton seemed homophobic as hell and might be the reason why Josh was uncomfortable telling Paxton he was gay. Josh might of even been in love with Paxton. Josh also was wearing briefs which isn't the straightest thing a guy can do.

Also to answer your other question, those girls were high on heroin. You can just tell by the way they are acting. The huge bag of candy is a heroin user thing. It helps them with withdrawals from heroin. Why else would they sink so low as to lure people to grizzly deaths? They were junkies.

1. josh was depressed as he just broke up with his girlfriend (not boyfriend)
2. he has sex with natalia (a girl)
3. he freaks out when the finger food man in the train puts his hand on Josh's knee (not sure where you think Josh put his hand on the man's knee?)

As for #3... Watch the movie again.
There is a scene where Josh meets the man from the train again. This time he apologizes and puts his hand on the man.

The man then tells him he totally understands and explains to Josh that they are in a similar situation. That he preferred to have a family and thus has his daughter which he loves very much - In other words, the man tells Josh that he is gay but he stayed in the closet and tells Josh he should make his own choice.

How could you possibly miss that?

I once talked to a guy I wasn't interested in and I put my hand on his knee but I did it unconsciously, he wasn't my type and I wasn't making any moves on him. My girl friends and I would often hug or put our hands on each other's knees, it doesn't mean we are gay for each other.

And not wanting to have sex with a prostitute automatically makes one gay to you? Do you even believe in monogamy? So if you were married and someone else came on to you, it would be gay to reject them?

Sugar does not help with withdrawal, but opiate addicts DO crave sugar. Opiates act on the mu receptors of the brain. The theory is that action on the mu receptors causes the craving for sweets. Another theory is that chronic opiate exposure lowers blood sugar, so the body seeks to raise it via a craving for sugar. It's been studied and there is in fact a scientific link.

You are ill informed.. Opiate withdrawal is in no way helped by sugar.. The only thing that helps opiate withdrawal is another opiate, an opiate blocker or time(though, most don't seem to stomach doing the time).

I don't think that not wanting to be around prostitutes would be an indication that Josh was gay. Granted, those were some hot hookers there, I haven't seen this in a while, but I seem to remember them being good looking. But anyways, not to get all moral but paying for sex is just sad and wrong. I don't remember him being uncomfortable with Natalia, but I do remember there being some bit in the story about him having broken up with a girlfriend or something? He could have been gay but i don't think so. Gayness is like the modern day witch hunt. If a guy has feminine qualities, or isn't your standard macho type then he's gotta be gay.

No. It just provides more depth and development for Josh's character. Most the gay theories also come from his interaction with the Dutch businessman as well, not just his lack of interest in the women

When he was having sex with Natalia I got the impression that he was in a state of ecstasy by the look on his face. So that obviously greatly reduces the odds that he was gay. Of course, he could have been a switch-hitter.

If Josh was flat-out gay, then how do you explain that he was having the time of his life with Natalia? That really doesn´t make sense to me. Maybe he was a 4 on the Kinsey scale and Natalia was one of the few women who floated his boat! And the Dutch businessman was probably a 5 on the Kinsey scale.

I don't think he was gay at all. He just seemed very introverted and shy. I think he also respected women in some way. It seems like his friends just wanted to take him out to "get him laid" and Josh wasn't that kind of person...perhaps he went along with it due to peer pressure. He seemed out of place with the group. I could tell he wanted to have a good time, but he didn't want to "just sleep" with women. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy that cared about his ex gf, and he felt uncomfortable using women in the way that the movie portrayed.

Just because a guy in his 20's doesn't think about "getting laid" all the time, that doesn't mean he's gay. He put his hand on the guy's leg because it was his way of "being nice" and sort of winning the guy over because the guy just saved him. He felt bad because of the way he freaked out on the train. He seemed like an emotional kind of guy that wanted to be nice.

No I didn't get any gay vibes from him at all. Just a different personality from the other two.

I got the impression that he hadn't quite figured out what he was yet. I think he thought of himself as straight, but had occasional thoughts about other males. He acted disgusted around his friends when the businessman made a pass at him, but later on when they were alone together he acted more accepting and returned the touch. I think he might've gone further with him if his friends weren't around.

To me it seemed like he had some fantasies he hadn't really explored. And he wouldn't admit this to his friends or even to himself. He might have liked girls more but I think he was curious about guys, too. Who knows? Maybe he would've gone all the way with a guy and wouldn't like it so it would be a once in a lifetime event. His curiosity would be satisfied and he'd go back to girls forever. Or maybe he would like it and never be with another woman. Since he was murdered we'll never know for sure.

Putting your hands on a strange young man's knee is not really at all okay when you're some old guy. He was responding to a hostile and psychopathic (or at least sociopathic) act and an invasion of his personal space as much as he was making a display of discomfort with homosexuality. You can't judge his reaction on that.

People have said a load of things in this discussion but I like the idea that he's bi. I don't remember the whole film frame by frame but yes he was enjoying it when they were doing s**t with those girls. I never really thought much about that character's deal until I saw this thread.
