Did anyone else think this film was horrendously bad?

Did anyone else think this film was horrendously bad? I absolutely despised this movie. It was too long and there was nothing really good about it. How this even got a best picture nomination is beyond me. Does anyone else agree?

reply

COMPLETELY agree!! and I have never seen Brad Pitt look more terible, around his eyes, YUK!! I hated this movie! so stupid! The Japanese part was beyond ridiculous! And why did they bother with the Nanny and the makeout scene? just retarded all around. OMG! I almost forgot the young kid masterbating over his sister, EWH!! just beyond sickening, what was up with this writer or director anyway? is he some kind of weird pervert? CLEARLY!!

reply

He was masturbating to his sister because he just started puberty and doesn't get to see other girls because of how his family lives (in the middle of nowhere). That family was basically Moroccan hillbillies.

The Japanese part didn't seem ridiculous to me, what was ridiculous about it? She was sexually frustrated and felt like nobody cared about her or loved her. So she wanted to get laid...people, men and women both, experience that all the time. It's like that song, "*beep* the pain away." Unfortunately, she had a huge language barrier that made it more difficult for her than most other girls.

Brad Pitt wasn't supposed to be pretty in this movie.

I dunno about the Nanny makeout scene, though. That was pretty lame.

reply

I understand, but YUK!! did we really need to see him do that? I myself just thought it was pretty poor taste. I understand about Pitt as well, I usually think he looks good no matter what, I was just surprised to see all the sagging skin and wrinkles around his eyes, he's not that old.

this movie was awesome! and i should know because i know good movies when i see good movies.

really horrible movie, so pretentious!

reply

I absolutely did. I freaking hate this movie and 21 Grams (from the same director) also (at least that one had some good performances in it). The structure of the movie is all over the *beep* place and relation between different stories so thin they could easily been thrown away and guess what, you'll get a better movie than this frustrating pile of crap. I could not relate to any of the characters. I simply didn't care. It's like the director himself didn't know what he was doing. You'll get this kinda trash when that happens.

One who's genuinely sleeping can be awoken, but one who pretends to be sleeping cannot.

I didn't expect a lot, because I didn't care very much for Amores Perros, but I adore this one. I love the way how it is narrated. What the film is actually about is subtly told en passant.

This movie was a waste of time that I can never get back. Bad just doesn't do it justice. I'd rather watch The Wicker Man again. Ughhh!

Writing from memory here, from the time I had seen it in the theatres: I felt it fell very short of what it was trying to narrate. It was trying to depict cultural differences and cultural themes and at the same time it was responding to stereotyping with stereotyping from the other side. It tried to go deep in the stories but came off very superficially judging the characters and so on and so forth. I remember feeling that the drama was very exaggerated and forced, and took away from the potential power of the stories it tried to intertwine.

Anyway, I felt that the film aimed at awing the populist viewers, with its many facets that were looking only just below the surface, but failed at making anything deep of the stories. Felt more like its purpose was to aim for the oscars with a classic tragedy angle.

@bengems.I just watched Babel last night.I wouldn't call it horrendously bad.I'm not surprised it was nominated for best picture at the Oscars because this is the kind of movie the academy USUALLY likes(the themes of the stories with the exception of the Japanese story).I didn't like it and it felt longer than it actually was.On a side note I'm very happy The Departed won best picture that year.In my OPINION it definitely deserved the oscar.
