Why did The Expendables and Eat Pray Love make more money?

This movie came out the same day as The Expendables and Eat Pray Love. Unfortunately, a super dull and generic action movie, and a long, boring, and generic Julia Roberts movie made more money than one of the most unique and clever films to come out of Hollywood in a long time. Why did people choose those two movies over this?

reply

Seriously?
Arnie, Willis, Stalone, Statham, Li under one roof? Julia Roberts under another?
or this obscure story with an obscure lead?
Money is made by imagery and impression. Content comes 2nd

I think it's a joke

Looks like somebody doesn't know the definition of "obscure".

"not known about" "not discovered".

Meaning, few people knew who the guy was

"somebody used to live here"

Arnie was barely in that one.

reply

More people preferred those movies I guess.

Not even a half-naked Mary Elizabeth Winstead could save this flick. It was bad and trying to pioneer some sort of style. It wasn't appealing to the target audience (gamers, possibly musicians?). Deadly combo. I didn't see Eat Pray Love but I wouldn't bash The Expendables that delivered on what it was supposed to be.

I don't see Cera as a good leading man, either. He needs another to act against in a comedy (Year One, Superbad) to work well.

As others said, they made money because they followed a marketable strategy. Scott Pilgrim didn't plus it sucked.

Clever film? What were you watching? Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was just a Guitar Hero/Batman (with the POW! ZAM!)/live-action mash-up. Unique? Yes. Clever? Fk no. You'd have to be brain-dead to think this movie was clever. It was straightforward and didn't stimulate the brain at all. The Terminator movies were much more thought-provoking.

The Expendables did well because the cast is extremely well known, and it does what it says on the tin. (Doesn't pretend to be what it's not.)

Likewise, Julia Roberts is very well known, more so than the characters in this film. She has a fan base going back twenty years...

Scott Pilgrim is also more aimed at one age demographic. It suffers from being longer than it need be.

Being completely honest, I enjoyed Scott Pilgrim more than both of those films. The Expendables was good but kinda boring, the sequel was MUCH better. As for Eat, Pray, Love, it was a good film but SPVTW is much more entertaining. I did love Expendables but EX2 was much better.

Expendables and Eat pray love had stronger buzz for them then Scott Pilgrim.

Expednables had my heros from my childhood (movie sucked, Agree koffee , ex 2 much better)

NEver read it, but i knew eat pray love was an extremely popular book.

did not know anything about scott pilgrim or the inital comic.

That being said, Scott Pilgrim was by far the best of these movies in my opinion.

Take a Marketing class. There's 4 P's. Not just 1. (you're assumption is that the best product wins... you must also consider placement, price, and promotion... the other two movies had much better promotion.)
